Grill Mesh (Building supply store)

Hey All,
Has anyone tried the expanded galvanized metal from a building supply store for grill mesh? It's the stuff you would use if you were putting tile up on a wall, u staple it to the wall then mud over it and stick the tile...anyway.

I have used the stuff in a few of my installs(amp racks ect) but never out in the front of a vehicle where it will be exposed to the elements.
I have some left over, i think the whole sheet (2' x8') cost me 16 bucks. If no one has tried it maybe I will jump in and see how well it holds up.

Let me know

Mike

it should hold up good. only thing that might cause a concern is rain. but you can always paint it with that rust inhibitor spray paint. if you do end up putting it on, post some pictures!!

Finished!

Well I gotta say I think it looks alright considering it only cost me about 13-16 bucks, plus time.
Here are some pics, if you guys want I can write a quick "How To"

I also spent an hourish cleaning that dirty *** engine bay.

I used some plastic epoxy and some zip ties(zip ties to hold while the epoxy sets). I may leave the zip ties there as you can not see them. I also used the zip ties to kind of sew the mesh together on the sides (where it cups, it needed relief cuts)

If you try this make sure you wear gloves! that stuff is sharp!

Good effort, not sure If I like how it looks, could be that I know it is tile wire.

LOL I was thinking the same thing, but now that it is on there and I have taken a good look at the 40 dollar mesh (they are the same thing aluminum expanded sheet metal) I think it should work out. If it would stop snowing!

McMaster Carr for all things mesh:

I bought some of the aluminum mesh with round holes in it for use in my hood. Excellent quality and lots to choose from, including stainless product.

Yep. Used that in my last car as grill mesh. Stuff was super rigid and looked great. Did the epoxy as well to bond. I just put a clear coat on mine to prevent rusting or discoloring. It never saw much weather, but looked great for years. Got mine from a local metal supply. Highly recommended stuff.

I wanted to update everyone. I have 2000km on this stuff and it looks like new, no rust or anything, bugs are a PITA to clean off but that will be with any of this stuff. Mounts are holding up very well. I will update again in a few months

the pattern is too spaced out. Most metal shops can order to right stuff so your FD doesnt look like 99% of honda civics on the roads.
