Getting the FD painted: Now on Second Body Shop

Here's the exciting part, after 8 years I'm finally getting my FD painted. It is getting painted sonic blue. Here are a few pictures of the car minus side skirts before it went off to the shop.

Now the unfortunate part:
So two weeks ago I dropped my car off to a guy who just started his own shop. I had previously talked with him and saw a drag rail that he had painted. The time estimate was three weeks and everything seemed great, finally getting the car done.......and then he kept avoiding my calls and I found out he hadn't touched my car and was "unsure" how he was going to do some of the body work, (que red flags flying up and hitting me in the face).

Realizing I was on the brink of a long nightmare I went over and took my car back and delivered it to a larger, reputable body shop. Guess you always figure the stories you hear of people struggling with dishonest shops isn't going to happen to you, such is life.

Three more weeks and she'll be done for real this time, i'll post updated pics as i get them

You made the right move getting your car out before the **** hi the fan.

+1 on the GTC bumper skin.

Are younplannint on running a full GTC kit?

Keep us updated!

Look into 3M clear bra, I have seen it compared to other products.

It looks good, is solvent resistant & can be sanded/ polished.

Protect your fancy new paint.

Thanks Prometheus-

I also have the gtc sideskirts but we're going to modify them a little bit

They are going to coat the front bumper and lower section of the sideskirts with the clear bra. I should have some updated pics in a few days.

I know alot fo people have great experiences with the bra but keep the price in mind. If the cost of adding the bra costs more than a repaint of the section in question, it may not be worth it. If you go for one though, make sure you don't cheap out. Apparently the cheaper ones will turn yellow, cause paint to fade or be really hard to remove, adding to the labor cost of repaint.

That GT-C front looks like it fits really well. Where did you get it? I will be looking for a replacement for mine which is in rough shape pretty soon.

I bought the bumper second hand from a forum member a few years back. It was suppose to be a rotary extreme bumper but I have a feeling it wasn't. The fitment is much closer than it was originally but the body shop is still going to have to do some minor filling/sanding. The mounting tabs for the core support were so far off we cut them off and put the factory bumper bracket on it, worked pretty good.

That factory bumper support bracket looks like an AWESOME idea! I have the pettit GT front bumper and it looks pretty weak as far as the mounting tabs are concerned. I'm going to try that out! Here are some shots of mine, before and after its recent paintjob.

A little under 5k, I was wanting to spend less but after my experience with the first shop I decided I'd rather pay what it took to have it done right

I already painted the engine bay when I had the engine out (3'rd pic in the first post), but yes they are doing everything else as well as some custom work on my side skirts and fixing the bumper fitment

Looking good!

Your car is going to look surprisingly similar to mine! Only difference will be the skirts which I have not put on yet.

...I have since removed the C-West lights.

^SWAT81 - I do have the smoked lens covers for the bumper

^turboIIrotary - yeah i've always been on the fence about that portion of them, i think that part being shaved off should make a much cleaner look

Update:

Well I wasn't able to pick the car up today as planned because one of the fenders had to be repainted. I was able to get some pictures of some of the parts. Most of them still need to be wet sanded and buffed but I think they are looking pretty good.

Since this is also the interior section I'll post some new interior items I just got from rx7.com

These floor mats seem to be very well made and say the come with a five year warranty against defects.
