Getting car painted. Am I getting screwed?

Getting car painted. Am I getting screwed?
Hey guys,
I have a question for you. Im getting a bunch of work done to my FD. This place was recommended to me and Im sure they are very reputable and do the job right.
-repainted
-engine bay repainted by hand without removing parts
-99 spec stuff added (spoiler, bumper, side marker lights, spirit R badge), involves some wiring
-body straightened
-dings removed
-front and rear glass removed, clear tint and replace with new seals.
-new tires added
Im getting charged at around 6800 total. This sounded reasonable to me until a friend of mine told me it was outrageous. We looked over the proposed job sheet and some things really stand out. One thing in particular.
Should paint material cost 1800 bucks? Its nothing special, just the 25G titanium gray paint used on the spirit R.
I would really appreciate the feedback.

You will pay about that much for a GOOD paintjob in california. I am **** about paint because i detail cars, so when i get paintwork, i would rather pay more and it be a high quality product than having to fix low cost or free crap later. Which is wasting more money.
As i told you earlier, you should get referrals from that shop and see multiple cars that they have done. Shop around.
Check the quality. If it's good: Good prepwork, no fisheyes, little to no orange peel, overall good quality with no corners cut, then yes it's fair.
If the quality sucks, then it's a ripoff.
You need to do more homework.

Yeah, if you checked the cars, thoroughly, (jams, engine compartment, and properly masking off, removing trims), and it's a quality paint job (no imperfections). Then 6000-8000 is fair.

Ahh your right you did speak to me about that. I totally forgot about that post and didnt see your response! Thanks man!
But about the actual cost of the paint, 1800 just seems like so much. Its not like this is perlescent or anything.
I cant wait to post pics of it after its done.

Andy, does that include the new tires and the 99 spec parts?
Noelle did Mitch's RE Amemiya widebody that we have at the shop right now and it looks mint, even like 5 years after it was painted.

I told you they are expensive, but very reputable. I paid a bit less but it was a few years ago and I have known the owner for a while. I also didn't have the engine bay painted or too much body work, or the stuff like wheels and wiring done. Last I was their they were using German Spies Hecker paint which I don't think comes cheap. I would go talk to Noel and ask him to tell you where the money is getting allocated. You told him you're a friend of mine right?

Him I think I mentioned you but not to Noelle <- sp?. ARGGGG. I will tomorrow. Yeah I knew it was going to be expensive. I actually expected it to be around 8k. The thing that got me was where the money went to. I expected it to be more labor bound than towards paint.
This doesnt include the interior stuff I want done yet. O man I cant wait to bring it to the shop.
Also yes, this includes the tires and the 99 spec parts.

If that's the case then I wouldn't worry much about it, Noel does absolute top notch work.....I've left my FD with him, that should tell you something
Also, keep in mind he stands behind his work 1000%. Ihor had Noel remove the 99 spec front plate holder and mold it flush (not a task most paint shops would even mess with), and IIRC he brought the car back like 4 times to have it redone and in the end Noel got it right and never charged him a penny.

If it includes the tires/99 spec parts that's a decent price.
My friend paid ~$5,000 for a full paint job on his FD at MobWorks (They've been featured on Speed channel and they're very very good). They went from MB - a nice pearl white. Painted everything, incl the engine bay (for the most part).

Go to the second page, third car down on the left side. White FD with C-west lights.

I can confirm.

if you go buy your own paint supplies (PPG, House of Kolors, Dupont, BASF, Ect..) and just have them do the work you might be able to drop the price down.
but $5k to $6k sounds about right for what your wanting. everyone has a friend who always says they can find it cheaper.

Most shops won't let you bring your own paint in, they'd much rather use the paint brand they're used to and at the same time mark it up a bit. Everyone has to make a living, right ?

I checked out my 7 on sat. Its disheartening seeing the car apart but I cant wait to see it complete.
The paint cost did include labor. The frame damage included in the bill included the many dings I had on the car before I bought it.
Everything looks Kosher. I can't wait to get the car finished and start pimping the body shop in the NE forums.

It sounds like a lot, but you're getting a bunch done, too. It's not uncommon to hear paint jobs with a high cost (4-6k).
I had a majority of my car painted by a professional paint/body guy I know (friend). He quoted me about $1500 for a complete job with jams and engine bay included (hook up price). He does phenomenal work, too. I didn't have the entire car painted, but he did hook me up. I suppose it's good to know people in this business.
I paid around $600-700 for the entire front end (front bumper, headlight covers, both fenders, hood on top and under, a pillars, partial driver door, engine bay, and painted and mounted knight sport sideskirts).

Most shops that do GOOD paint work will disassemble the car of all the fenders, lights, moldings, trim pieces etcso they can make sure they get good coverage in the "semi-hidden" areas.
A paint job by a good shop that is doing some body work will easily run you $6k.
Everyone says they got a great paint job for so cheap and on the internet in a pic from 10 feet away it looks great. You see that same car in person and 9/10 times you can see the peel from a mile away, they have over spray on everything, they body is wavy, you can find runs in the clear or "dull spots" and it lasts about 2-3 years before it looks like total ****.
Sounds like the shop you went to does good work. Trust them, you will be happy with the car when they are done because odds are they are a shop that CARES about their work and cares that their customers are happy.

The shop doesnt look to pretty though but don't be fooled.
They had a website up but are having problems with their provider and web master. They had some great looking pics up.
Tell them Andy sent ya!
Right now they are pretty damn busy. I think they have a big MR2 project coming up to.
