Geting new Sub, how to wire it? (Ohms)
Geting new Sub, how to wire it? (Ohms)
Ok, I have an older RF 800a2 amp that is absolutely awsome. I have been driving a JL 10w0 (4ohm) sub with that...and I think its time to upgrade the sub to get some more of the Amp's potential out of it. (using a sealed box).
Due to hatch space limitations, I want to stick to a single 10" system. I have narrowed the field down to either a JL 10w6v2, or the older 10w6.
Now, for the question: My Amp will go down to 2 ohms, maybe even 1 ohm, but since almost anything will sound good in a hatch, and I am no longer 18 years old, I have no desire to crack my windshield, get a nose bleed, or make my girlfriend's bra unclip just from the sound of the bass! So, I wanted to drive the sub at 4 ohms, to get 200 watts per channel out of the Amp. However, the 10w6v2 wants more power than that, so I would probably need to take that sub down to 2 ohm - and 800 total watts. The regular 10w6, can be wired at 3 ohms or 6 ohms.
What do you guys recomend I do? I dont want a system that hits too strong and hard, I am not competing...just enjoying my daily driving. Would 800 watts at 2 ohms be too much for me? Should I go with the 3 ohm setup? Should I look for another sub that I can wire to 4 ohms?
Please, I would appreciate any advise.

well if you dont want something that slams, and you want to use your amp, sounds like you need to find a new sub that can run efficiently at 4 ohms and 200 watts. I do love me the JL's though, as I am running the same 10w0 in a sealed box in my car and I love it for nice mild, crisp bass.
What are on the other channels of your amp (just curious).
Oh yeah, you could also sell the amp and get something more appropriate to power the smaller, weaker w0.
JMO.

I am very confused.
Have any of you guys ever heard of a volume control?
Run the sub in 3 ohm configuration. Keep volume on sub set to reasonable level. What is difficult to understand here?

For turning down the response of the sub, do you mean "Gain" as opposed to "Volume"? Steve
the volume control has like an 8 foot cable, so i can install it somewhere on the dash, or where i want
just my .02

yes you can rum jl's W6 either at 3 or 6 ohms. here is the link on how to hook them up. W6 and W6v2 are pretty much the same, just different look and spider design. http://www.jlaudio.com/subwoofers/pdfs/10_12W6_MAN.pdf

My point was that there is nothing to worry about. If the sub is too loud in relation to the rest of the music (frequent occurence!), then reduce the channel trim to the sub.
The sub only "needs" more power if you are playing it at higher levels. You can feed the sub with a 3000 Watt amplifier, but if you are only playing it at 80 dB, you aren't USING 3000 Watts.....
I would NEVER worry about having too much power.
the gain should not be turned down/up to lower/higher the volume.
you have to tune the gain to its highest point before distortion is heard and keep it there. otherwise it will sound like ****.
the gain isnt meant for volume control...you can turn down the bass from your head unit.
