Gas smell inside FD, how to get rid of it???

hey all... ok, i think this is the proper forum for this quey, if not... damn.

i recently did a large upgrade to the fuel system on my FD, including an inline pump and a surge-tank... at one point early on in the project (3 months ago), one of the fittings on my surge-tank was leaking very slightly, and some gas spilled into the spare tire well (and carpet, but i've since thrown that all out!), i used a cleaning product called 'Simply Green' heavily to clean out the gas, but the smell remains... especially after the car has been parked for extended periods. i'm *almost* positive that there isn't any actual leaking happening any longer, and i'm wondering if the spilled gas can linger this long, and if so, how to get rid of it for good... its not too strong, but it makes my wife wince everytime she gets in the car (and i don't need any more reasons for her to not like the FD!)... any advice or pointers greatly appreciated, thx all..

Put a kitty liter box full of baking soda in the trunk maybe? Baking soda is usually good to absorb most odors, along with newspaper. You can collect Sunday Chronicles and leave em in the back , hehe.

hmm, i thought that was a joke at first! i'll try that this weekend then, i've checked over and over for leaks back there but there just don't seem to be any... my only worry is that not having that little metal cover any longer that covers the tank access is letting in the smell, i've got fuel lines running out from there now to the surge tank. thx daniel..!

Actually, that (the tank lid) maybe your problem. Huy in OK had his lid put on incorrectly, and the rubber gasket has piched/folded and led to gas fumes in the car. You might want ot see about getting rubber stock and cutting a new gasket. Hope that helps!

dclin, my lid was sheared in half to allow the fuel lines to reach the surge-tank, i wonder if this might actually be the real culprit then..? there are no leaks visible (no moisture) but maybe it is straight fumes coming up... damn, need to build somehting to house the hoses, seal it up perhaps... thx, i'll check that out tomorrow..

Is it something that you can silicon on the outside? Not sure if silicon sealant is fuel 'fumes' resistant though, in the manner that silicon hose is not fuel (direct contact) resistant...
