A few pics of my (somewhat) new custom upholstry

Enjoy, lemme know what you think, or whatever...

I used to have tan carpet and tan leather seats. I like this much, much better.

In the neighborhood of $1500 for both seats and re-dyes of everything from the carpet to the seatbelt holders. The guys I went with (Paul at Leather Menders if you ever need to recommend anyone in Austin) are still perfecting how to get the plastic pieces to hold the dye properly for the long-term, but they did a fantastic job.

Frank, I went with Ultrasuede inserts in the middle to get a little more butt grip during autoX events and spirited street cornering. Leather bolsters and vinyl on the backs of the seats.

I'm curious to see how the Ultrasuede holds up in the long run. Paul mentioned that it may be something I'll be looking at replacing in the near future if I use the car a lot (which I don't). We'll see.

So far they're great. Grip like glue.

AWESOME!

That's what I wanted to see. I know from mazdacomp that the seatbelt holders can't be purchased so your solution was what I was planning to do anyways.

Enuttage, did you also paint the lower plastic trim on the seats? How is it holding up? Also, how is the seatbelt holders doing? see any tan with wear?

And do they have an affiliate in Dallas

The seatbealt holder plastic is taking the biggest hit so far. It is starting to show tan (the plastic, not the nylon). What I'd like to do eventually is find someone parting out a black-seated car, or someone that is trashing their black seats for aftermarket ones and snag their holders.

The lower plastic trim was dyed too, and seems to be holding up much better. I haven't seen any wear on it yet. But if the seatbelt holder is going, I figure the lower stuff will eventually go too if it sees any contact with anything.

lol. No affiliate in Dallas that I know of. This guy definitely runs his own shop only. If your car isn't your daily driver, it might be worth talking to him. Or you could just ship him one seat at a time. He'll do it that way until you have to let him have the car for the carpet and such.

the carpet is already done (purchased from Mazdacomp)

I had another idea about the seatbelt holder...I have seen some OEM ones on the BMW roadster and Porche Boxter...I wonder if those are available?

btw, they do look GREAT!

Just curious how much is it to buy the ultrasuede to be able to fit two seats?

If its genuine Ultrasuede Milano (7.95 oz. per square yard) or Ambiance (11.1 oz. per square yard) it will outlast the car. Milano withstands 125,000 double rubs on a Wyzenbeek machine, Ambiance 200,000. That's equivalent to getting in and out of your car 62,500 times for the Milano, 100,00 times for the Ambiance. More durable than even the best leather or Marine grade vinyl. These are the only two grades recommended for automotive upholstery.

If its not genuine Ultrasuede you got dicked and it probably will wear out in a year or two - there are a dozen imitators out there that retail for $12.00 a yard, the genuine stuff is usually $65 to $85 a yard retail depending on grade. I'm surprised your upholstery shop did not know how durable it is...I would ask him if it's Milano or Ambiance.

If he doesn't know what you're talking about you've been had. (sorry..)

How do I know? I'm an authorized Ultrasuede Vendor. (sorry, but I don't sell to the public)

BTW - nice interior! I did mine the same way.

Thanks Ron!

My understanding was that the only reason my job cost as much as it did was because of the Ultrasuede, so...I'm guessing it's the good stuff. Dunno though.

And he didn't seem to know a ton about it, but he also admitted that he rarely orders the stuff. He does a ton of leather, but apparently not much Ultrasuede.

He recommended it over several other materials though, despite the cost (he told me up front it would cost more). He gave me a swatch sheet to look at (to pick out my color) before I ordered, and I seem to remember an actual Ultrasuede TM on the sheet. Of course I could be just assuming I saw it. We all fall victim to fabricated memory every once in awhile.

This guy does work for several of the big-wig V.P.'s for tech companies in town though, so I presume he's good for his word and work.

Regardless, I hope I'm in the clear on it. Only time will tell.

I think you've got the real thing - the guy would have to have larceny in his heart to mis-lead you, and if he special ordered from color swatches that's a good thing too. Ultrasuede (Toray) is REALLY tough on fabricators that claim to use their brand but don't. They prosecute and pursue the fakes worldwide with the same vengeance that Rolex does.

You'll be REALLY happy with the performance - don't be afraid to wash it with a mild detergent or use cleaning fluid if you get -- ummmm - lipstick on it from your g/f. It will come right off. It's really comfortable in hot weather since it breathes.

Vacuum and brush it gently once in a while. It will wear like iron. It's one of those rare products that really IS worth the extra money. You made a good investment in quality!
