I want to upgrade my stock FD speakers but i am not sure what to get. I basically want to replace the door speakers and rear panels. I am not interested in amps or crazy equipment. I have a pioneer 50w x4 cd radio. what would be a good upgrade? i was looking at MB Quart but i don't know much about audio.

I'm not a big audio guy either but I mounted Boston Acoustics in mine and I'm happy with them. I kind of prefer the sound of the exhaust/blow-off valve.

There are plenty of threads detailing the fitment of different speaker sizes (5.25 or 6.5 in front and 5x7 or 6x8 in rear). It's not too hard to make brackets to fit the larger sizes. If you're going to power these speakers off of your head unit, then just find matching coaxials in the sizes you want. I always recommend Alpine, Pioneer, Boston, JL, and JBL for people looking for mid-priced coaxials to replace factory speakers. Obvious differences in sound quality don't become apparent until you start listening to component speakers driven by dedicated amps. Then, it's worth your time and money to go and audition several setups before you buy.

As an fyi the speaker depth is the biggest concern here. If I remember correctly they should not be deeper then 2.5 inches from the mounting point. There is a little room to play but not much.

I put in a couple 5 1/4" Alpine Type-S which I'm powering straight off my deck (Alpine W505). They're inexpensive, sound fine in a such a small space, and fit the doors well. Also, they fit behind the speaker grille easily. Plus, considering your power source you don't really need anything with too much capacity.

By the way, do you have a sub installed?

I'm making my own wooden brackets for the doors to house 6.5" Alpine Component Speakers. Tweeters are put right through the door panels.
In the back I'm doing a Alpine Type-E sub in a DamonB style sub box and a small cheap bridged amp.

MB Quartz are really good speakers, and yeah they have the custom door speaker mounts on Ebay for 20 bucks + shipping..

I have been around the block and back when it comes to car/home audio equipment. Most important question is what is your budget? I can tell you the Rainbow Reference is to die for, but that will run you close to 10k....

The MB Quarts are going to be pretty high and are harsh for a lot of listeners. Do you want a more neutral sound or ...? For a short list of good companies check out:

I will probably be switching to a set of dynaudio or morel 3ways. I would say search those brands for your specific budget, cant go wrong with any of the previously mentioned brands.

The Pioneer PRS line will not fit especially the 6.5 inch...you will have to have custom enclosures made that stick out of the door panel...that's from experience. I will say they are the best sounding speaker I've heard for half the cost of it's competitors.

The set I ended up going with are the Diamond S600 HEX with the silk tweeter. Very clean sound and if you have power behind them the mid range is not weak. The topper is that they fit but again you're not looking to get crazy. It looks like you want to power your speakers of off the headunit which really isn't a lot of power especially for component speakers.

If I were to look at a co axel (sp) speaker the Pioneer line is made with alot of the same technology as their PRS line but depth is a concern (not sure what it is), JL Audio makes a nice simple set and believe it or not I've some luck with the JBL line for some simple speakers.

Key here is depth it's gotta fit without hitting the window regulator, then power requirements if you want to put 50 watts to them then the skies the limits.

Eh, their Focal Be no7(~$5000) and utopia line(not too expensive used, but a MASSIVE magnet, no way they are fitting in the fd door) are expensive but they have cheaper models that can be had for less then $500 used. I am budgeting about $1200 for my next set and about $1100 for a sinfoni amplifier to power them.

It's just money.

I think the alpine type x and f1 status speakers are pretty nice too, if I remember correctly they use scan revelator mids which are excellent.

Nice pickup on those diamond speakers, they can be had pretty cheaply now-a-days, I love their silk dome tweeter.

Infinity makes a awesome speaker for the price, i have them in my truck (soon to come in the fd) running off of a 760 watt 4 channel Pioneer Amp, 2 1" dome tweeters running off the deck. The speakers are the Infinity refrence series, 6x9 in front and 6 1/2 rear... They are screaming loud and still clear beyond volumes i want to listen to.

I was looking at some alpine speakers and the sells guy told me i should get the front door speakers with out tweeters on built in and get (separate tweeter) for the door panel. does this sound correct?

I don't want a $2000 dollar system i just want the **** pit to sound that of a new BMW or a new modern car.

^he wants you to get component's opposed to co-axial. This is correct as components do sound better (more expensive), but you need to know what your doing, tweeter placement is key (preferably in the a-pillar - its important to find out if the tweeter is capable of playing off axis)

I got a set of Polk SR5250 which are 5-1/4" components. The tweeters are the same as the 6-1/2" SR6500. The highs are amazing!! Clarity reign supreme! Bass lacks a bit for the FD, but then again, that's what subs are for.

it looks ghetto but they are outstanding speakers. Very rare speakers as well!
look for the BSM serie or MXD. As Pure said, the positioning is very very important.

-MB used to be good, but since they moved the production to another country they lost the quality that helped them make their name.

Okay, MB Quart is a good line, but not if u plan to run off your deck. MB's NEED more power than what your head unit can provide. Without an external amp you are pretty much wasting your money on these. I have heard very good things about the Boston Acoustics off of the stock deck power though.

As mentioned earlier, mounting depth for the fronts is very critical. I learned the hard way and had to highly modify my 6.5" brackets off of ebay to get them to clear both the panel and the window behind the speaker. Measure and measure again.

I went with CDT audio, lesser known manufacturer but make a great produce. Also, Elemental Designs is another independent place that has quality stuff for much less than the higher end, mainstream companys. If I was you, I would look at depth first, then go to your local crap audio place and listen to all sorts and go from there. You can buy them cheaper online hands down, but sound is whats important.

I agree about the amp. I have a JL e4300 amp(nothing crazy) with 4 JL TR speakers(6 in. front/5x7 in back). Padded up the door and rear panels and it sounds almost as good as my home system. Very full and crisp. You don't need 1000 watts in this car for it to sound fantastic.

I have a line driver under the passenger seat so I get to keep the "awesome" stock stereo/cd player. It sounds 200% better.

UPDATE: Most of you might know may this but i did not at the time. I was looking for speakers to upgrade the stock system. My car is a touring and my bose system was ripped out of the car when i bough it. I was looking to upgrade the door speakers only because because i have nothing in the back and I couldn't find a speaker that could fit the stock bose door box.What i didn't know was that the R1 FDs came with door brackets (unlike bose) that can be upgraded to "6.5 inch" speakers... I had to cut some of the plastic in the back of the speaker braket but i was able to install (Alpine SPS-600C) 6.5 speakers in the door with tweeters in the kick panels ( i didn't want to drill my door panels)

These speakers sound awesome running just of the radio, The base created by the hollow door sound good as well. the only thing i gotta complain about is that the tweeters are two loud and it bothers my ears. besides that i recommend the (Alpine SPS-600C) for the doors.
