FD Bose spkr, sounded like static explosion-what happened?

For a while now I've had an intermittant pop from my RH door speakerwhen turning on or off my Bose HU and also sometimes what sounds like someone blowing on a microphone coming from it while still playing the audio.

Today while the HU was on but the volume turned all the way down the RH unit made a waaaaaaaaaaah for 2 seconds followed by what sounded like an explosion of static noise. I turned it off and have not turned it back on since.

I have been considering replacing all the Bose stuff and listing it for sale. Would like to know what happened as well as being able to disclose that to potential buyers.

Would also like some advice on what size speaker adapters to use for the doors, given that I'm not an audiophile and just would like whatever size would be the easiest to get speakers for.

I'm considering the PVC speaker adapters described as:

made with 4 3/4" round cutouts to house most 5 1/4" aftermarket speakers, or

made with 5 1/2" round cutouts to house most 6 1/2" aftermarket speakers.

Recommendations on any others, I would also appreciate.

There are lots of options available. I had my individual speaker amps rebuilt by a place down in Florida and replaced the head unit with a later model 626 Bose unit. It is amazing how good the system for the RX7 was/is when working properly.

Thanks for your reply. I keep going back and forth. Haven't decided if I want to replace everything or just get a compatible HU and fix or replace the Bose units in the doors. If might do the latter if I can find a Mazda/Bose HU single DIN, CD, and MP3 if such a thing exists.

I saw a post in not too distant past where someone bought replacement door speakers and amps from Bose. The prices at that time were not too expensive. I have some more research to do.

If you want to repair the stock bose amps theres a great write up on it here: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...-amps-1150545/

Usually the old capacitators are fried up and just replacing them will do the trick. If you are handy with a soldering iron and know how to rework PCBs it should be no issue. If not you can take it to an electronics repair shop.
