extent of rust?
There is a FC I was looking at a while back and I am hesitant on buying it, mainly due to a minor rust problem.
There is about an inch wide streak of rust on the rear fender. It may have been caused my a stone-chipping or perhaps a scratch by another car. I am guessing whatever did happen to the car, it removed all the paint and primer and cut into the metal part of the fender and caused it to rust. Im guessing from the grainy and browny-orange texture that its been like that for a while, months maybe even years.
What worries me is that the small rust that I can see is actually part of a bigger rust problem on the other side of the fender.
How much would it cost to get rid of the rust if it were just confined to that 1 inch area ?(cost would add in rust repair + paint)
What is the probability that the rust has completely infected the whole fender? If that is the case how much would THAT cost?
Thanks

The only way to tell the extent of rusting is to start the repair. If it is just surface rust, you might be able to grind off, prime, fill, prime then repaint. If it is rusted through, then the cancer has started, and like all cancer, it must be cut out. A new piece of sheetmetal is then welded in place. If that is the only rust spot on the car, then you shouldn't worry too much about additional damage. Probably around $500 to repair properly.
