dyeing seat a different color

Hi everyone, I have a 1983 7 with a black interior and red turbo 2 seats, I like the seats but they just don't match so I would like to re dye them black, how ever I have never done this before so I am hoping you guys can help me out on figuring out what kind of dye to buy, what to do, and what not to do, thanks

Only time I dyed leather was a portion of a blue leather seat in my '88 GXL where the outer seat bolster was wearing. I used Febbings dye which is a good quality product and only available at shoe repair places, AFIK.

The blue was difficult to match. I came out looking purple so I asked the guy where I bought it. He suggested using a little lacquer thinner on it. I did this and within a month of wear it looked so good you couldn't even tell the difference.

So, I would recommend Febbings brand dye and you could try asking questions to a shoe repair guy, if you can't get any other good advice, to see if you need to try to remove some of the red dye before using the black and, if so, what to remove it with.

Also, is the whole seat leather? It is possible that the sides and back could be naughahide in which case I am not sure it will take dye the same as leather.

In for some advice too, just picked up a faded set of Corbeaus.

In my Miata phase I found this quick writeup on miata.net
Photo 1 of album Seats w/Fabric Color

I think DupliColor and Rustoleum have fabric paint but don't have any experience with either.
