Double DIN HU in 1st gen/85?

I want to replace the Alpine unit that a PO installed, and I'd like to go a bit upscale w/a double DIN touchscreen unit.

Crutchfield only shows single DIN units that fit; but the dimensions of the available opening look like there should be clearance.

Has anyone installed double DIN units in a 1st gen/85 before? Any gotchas?

Yes a double din will work just fine and when they are flipped down they don't even hit the shifter. You are going to need a dash install kit though the website Parts Express has one for under 20 bucks. Don't even waste your time looking for it at local autoparts stores as chances are the don't have it (ask me how i know). Anyway it will be called the mazda multi-kit and your gonna have to modify it a little but its so easy a caveman can do it. Instructions are included i recommend using a dremel so that you have nice even cuts. Here is a picture of mine and by the way i am an audio nut I've been into car audio for about 8 years and i have a cheap ebay double din dvd unit I've owned it now for about 2 years and havent had any trouble at all and it was under 200 shipped so you may want to check them out. Also i have made multiple sub enclosures for fb's if you have any audio questions just shoot me a pm and i will help all that i can.

If your talking about this install kit...

Mazda Multi-Kit 1984-1995

Could you take the PDF and show exactly how to mod the kit you would be amazing for us "not so good" when it comes to Car Audio guys . When I hear the word CUT I get nervous. Maybe do like they do with the Nikki Stripping images and color the stuff you cut out.
