Door speaker install. How deep can I go?
Hi all,
I have a set of Boston Acoustics 6.4 pro series separates left over from a system I had in my 2000 Tundra. I want to put them in my FD! Anyone know if they will fit? I hear doors are shallow. Will they work if I use a spacer?
Somebody has had to have tried it. Please help
Thanks

Thank you, FD3Boost. I enjoy reading posts from you and Ryan and a few of the other NVa boys. You guys are funny.
Sorry you can't make it Saturday. I'm looking forward to it. Maybe next time. I'll be posting pics real soon myself.
Stayed tuned,

I'm gonna do it myself today. Audio is too easy. I need Ryan's help with non-sequential and a Torque brace. It's damned nice of him to offer help to a total stranger.

Hey Twisted,
Make sure to seal around the speaker with something (I used hot glue) to keep the rear sound waves from the speaker form colliding with the front ones.

WAIT! I have 6.5s and I wouldn't say they fit. They are in the doors, but they fit about as well as marve Albert in women's underwear. The problem is the depth. When you're installing them make sure you have enough clearance for the window to retract. In my case this caused the speakers to touch the plastic grill frames on the doors. To overcome this, I ground the grill frames down flat-removing the screw mounts that hold the speakers grills to the doors, and the raised plastic ridge that provides structural support for the plastic screw holes. Simply put you have to make the speaker grills 2 dimensional.
You're probably wondering how you secure the grills w/o the mounting screws. The metal speaker grill is secured to the mounting frame by bending the grill edges over the plastic frame-creating a 180% bend with the edge of the frame in between. If you unfold it while the grill is in the door panel the edge will push against the door panels, holding the grill to the plastic and the plastic to the doors. To ensure there was no vibration I put silicon putty around the edges.-how about that, no extra parts required and it saves weight!
This will get you an additional inch of clearance, which you will definitely need if you plan on using the stock speaker mounts as a starting point. Even after all this, there is still not enough clearance on the passenger side. The speaker will occasionally rub against the frame, but at least there are no sharp edges to cut the woofer. In addition you will notice that the center of the speaker is not centered with the grill. With my setup, approximately 25% of the speaker is firing into the door panel rather than the grill.
In the end if you want to use BA 6s and get the most out of them you will have to at the very least build a 3d mount, but to really get your money's worth I would consider modifying the stock grill openings to accommodate the larger speakers (possibly making them stick out further to get more clearance.
I used to have 5in BA speakers there-if I had to do it again I'd stay with that setup-much less complicated.
