Order a new gauge cover. The gauge cover is plastic (it covers ALL the gauges) and that kind of stuff tears it up. You can get them for around $65 from Malloy Mazda.

really easy to swap out.
Remove three screws to take off the steering column surround. Pop out the side vent (by driver's door), remove two screws to remove the kick panel. Remove three screws (two bottom- one on top) to unbolt the cluster. Pull it out (snaps in the back). Disconnect all the plugs (8 and a bulb i believe) and take the cluster to a workbench.
Remove the four screws holding the cluster to the cover, then ou can unsnap the plastic cover.
When you're this route, you can try another way to clean it, but you're going to need rubbing compound and swirl remover. The idea is to use the rubbing compound to cut away the damaged plastic and then use the swirl remover to remove the scratches... Give it a try if you're gonna buy a new one...

Here's a pic of my old worn out one:
I tried re-chroming mine... No workie.. BUT: I have Autometer Gauges. I know... Autometer.... They've worked fine for me.
Anyway, the Autometers have the siver rim; not chrome. So, I removed the stock gauge Bezel and did it in the matte (sp?) silver. Looks pretty badass. I'll throw up some pics later.
