Check out deez tail lights

Been working on this tail light project. Here is the prototype. Need to get some better bulbs for the brakes but other than that has turned out better than expected.

exactly what I was thinking of doing, but may try a new plasma tail light bulb first and see how it works. The stock incandescent works pretty good just need it a tad brighter.

Your prototype looks nice.

For the brakes, the plasma (COB) based LED bulbs look like they will be a nice upgrade. Make sure you get the 1157 (dual intensity) ones in red, not white, as you need to match the color of the LED to the lens color or you will lose most of the brightness.

If you go the route I did (and that will give you the brightest light output), shoot me a pm if you need any help.

^ No problems. Look forward to seeing how they turn out for you. Wish the plasma cob bulb guys would include the lumen ratings on the bulbs. That would tell us if they are going to be bright enough.
