There are a lot of choices out there. Carbon fiber comes in many colors, weaves and materials. Kevlar, carbon, and metals are available. The possibilities are endless. You can also tint the clear coat to change the color/ shade. Ask for uv resistant clearcoat when you have your parts wrapped. Tip#1 consider uniformity, carbon fiber is manufactured and sold on rolls. If you get everything done at once it will match. Tip#2 draw a diagram of how your parts fit together and ask that the pattern of the weave matches. Be prepared to be without your parts for several months. Consider having the work performed during an engine rebuild. What about the cost? I paid $1100 not including the steering wheel. There are a lot of aftermarket parts available in carbon fiber. Shine auto project, Aerofiber, offer some great parts wrapped in your choice of twin/twill or single weave/JDM 1x1. Heres some examples of their work. Aerofiber replica Feed adj. spoiler in twin weave and Shine Auto Project replica Feed hood and sideskirts also in twin weave.

So far I've shown you, Twin weave or Twill as it's also known as, let's look at an aftermarket part offered in plain weave also known as single weave and JDM 1x1.

Here's a website; www.fiberglasssupply.com They offer many types of carbon material including hybrid fabrics that offer some color options. Hybrid fabrics combine two or more different fibers in the same matrix. Texalium is also available here, which is a Hexcel product that has a proprietary coating of aluminum to give it a reflective surface. Look familiar?

There are parts coming from Japan that say that they are carbon fiber or use the term carbon look, actually they are printed/painted on to look the part. Feed door handles and Mazdaspeed dash trim kits come to mind. Don't be fooled Feed and Mazdaspeed do offer real carbon fiber parts in twin, JDM, and dry carbon. Dry carbon fiber parts are molded and wet carbon fiber is added to a part using resins then clear coated. The cost factor is cheaper if you go with wet. Pay attention to the pics before you buy carbon fiber parts so that you get the weave that you're looking for. The Feed uim cover is dry carbon and only comes in 1x1, their scuff plates are twin weave. You may have to rewrap your parts later on to match because they don't offer both. That's where people like Shine Auto Project and Aerofiber are valuable resources, because you get a choice.

Sometimes you see one thing and get something else. Here's a classic example, I purchased some silver carbon fiber Craftsquare mirrors. From the pics on their website, It looks like they are offered in twin weave texalium silver. When I received my order, I was given single weave silver with a blue clear coat. I'll have them rewrapped later to match my other parts. The first pic is from their site and this is what I got, big difference. It's sometimes better to purchase the part plain and have it wrapped with your other parts at the same time for uniformity. That gets expensive so save up.

I'm hoping that anyone with knowledge on the subject will chime in so that we can have a consolidated thread for information on suppliers, installers, and d.i.y. tips. My experiences are limited on the installation techniques, but I'm researching and posting as I go.

It's similar to fiberglass except you vacuum seal it.

Dry carbon fiber and wet carbon fiber have to do with how the part is laid up.

Wet carbon fiber is essentially like fiberglass in that the weave has no resin in it. You wet the mold/part with resin, lay in the weave and then add additional resin and additional layers of weave if needed. Ideally the part is then vacuum bagged and put under pressure so that excess resin is squeazed out and the part is held firmly against the mold as the resin dries. This is how most people in their garages are covering interior parts.

Dry carbon fiber is frequently called "pre-preg". In this case the carbon fiber cloth is already impregnated with resin. The cloth is layed into a mold and each additional layer added as well. The part is then vacuum bagged and placed in an autoclave (a large pressurized oven). When heated the resin already present in the cloth melts and then wets into the fibers and between the layers of cloth. The resin then dries and you have a finished part.

The advantages of dry carbon fiber are that the amount of resin present is always correct since it's already in the cloth; there's never too little, too much or voids where there is no resin. This tends to make a lighter, stronger part with a better surface finish as well as hold much tighter tolerances in thickness. It also implies that the company making the parts is a bit more advanced in their design and engineering since it requires more specialized techniques and tools.

Honestly when talking about carbon fiber hoods, fenders etc none of this really matters. What counts most is the fit of the part and the quality of its finish. If you're building true carbon fiber structures that must carry loads (chassis, aerospace parts, etc) then there's no doubt that a dry lay up is superior.

There used to be a tuning shop here in Seattle, but they went out of business. The shop owner had some contacts in Indonesia, where he was from that did the work. They have also gone out of business, last I heard. Unfortunately I never asked the name of the Indonesian company. They offered the silver, black and another carbon fiber called titanium, which was the difference of the two. I have not seen the titanium carbon fiber since. The quality was top notch, the turnaround around 3 months including customs and shipping by sea. I paid $1100 for everything minus the custom Momo wheel.

Can't attest to their work myself, but throwing another name out there. Someone on a local board had their dash pieces overlayed by www.topshopheadliners.com. They quoted about $500 for the entire center console (shown together in third picture).

I was told they will do molds and create pieces for larger orders, instead of just overlays for custom orders.
