Bose issue - question

I've searched and found a ton of threads on the Bose system issues..I'm trying to determine if the problem is the head unit itself or one/many of the amps. It seems logical that if one of the amps went out on me it could cause noise/squelching from one particular speaker. In my case though when I turn the radio on or put a cd in I get awful squeeling/squelch from all the speakers, there is not an audible noise from any of the speakers. So before I go in and take off the door panels etc. if its the head unit itself I'd just replace that.. seems logical to me that the signal the deck is sending out to the amps is shot?
