I had a local stereo shop install my system, and they fit 6.5" Diamond spearates in the doors along with the crossovers.

I highly recommend going with a good pair of separates if you decide to go with an aftermarket stereo.

But if you decide that you don't want to spend the ca$h for a whole system, email me. I have my used bose system(door speakers & amps, and the bass tube for sale)

How much of a pain in the *** was it to fit the 6 1/2s in there? I would like to go with the larger size if it's not too bad. I could live with the 5 1/4s though.

Thanks for the offers on the replacement bose speakers.. but i've been waiting for an excuss to upgrade the factory set-up.

Thanks, Damie

if you remove only the speaker, a 4x6 to a 5 1/4 will fit in there. if you remove the entire amp assembly, the possibilities are endless. there are four wires running to the amp, the larger two, green and orange, are the gnd and hot for the amp, cut these and butt them off. the other two striped wires are for the speakers. the door panels are self explanitory to remove, those inside screws at the front jam are the trick.

I've heard the base model (non-bose) enclosures will fit a larger speaker.

I ripped out ALL of the Bose stuff last December.

Car Stereo Installation
http://community.webshots.com/album/27117617XXWljlHyqI

Here is a write up I sent to the RX7 list back then. It should answer any questions you have.

When I bought the car almost 2 years ago, the drivers speaker was about 1/2
way blown. I never thought the Bose wave in the rear provided much to the
sound of the stereo. Then the amp in the Wave blew out, so I just removed
it. I also did not like the Bose system taking up a spot for the radio and a
second for the CD.

Before I went out shopping, I pulled the passenger door panel off to see how
much room there was for a speaker. Wow, you could fit a huge speaker in
there if you remove the Bose enclosure, however It could only be 1 inch
deep! Not much metal to mount a speaker to either. Looks like the easiest
way was to continue using the Bose enclosure.

I went to Best Buy with plans to find a CD, with a good tuner, and at least
45 watts per channel. I've normally had Kenwood in the past, but Best Buy
does not carry that brand or Alpine. (I had $325 in gift certificates so it
would be at Best Buy)

None of the stereos at BB really jumped out at me. (I had stopped by Circuit
City first to compare prices for leverage later. They had a Alpine for $269
I liked.) While at BB I noticed about 1/2 of them also played MP3's. I don't
have any, but thought I should get a unit that would play them anyway.
(Which the Alpine would not have.)

I spent at least two hours looking at the different models, listening to
stereos and speakers. I looked at Sony and Jensen, but went with a Aiwa on
clearance from $349 to $249. I noticed it was the last one, and was able to
get it for $219. It's the CDC-MP32 with 50 watts x 4 channels, 2 RCA preouts
and MP3 playback.

There were only three models of the 4" speakers to choose from. I bought the
Cerwin Vega's. Brought them home and found they were a little too small in
diameter and a little too deep.

Back to BB, returned the Cerwin Vega's and brought along the Bose enclosure.
I found the Pioneer 5 1/4" 2 way speakers sounded better than any of the 4"
speakers (and in the 5 1/4" only second best to Cerwin Vega), fit better,
and cost the same as the 4" CV's I returned. (The 5 1/4 Cerwin Vega's were
even deeper than the 4" ones, so I stayed away from them. If I had the
clearance I would have bought the CV's again though, even at $40 more than
the Pioneers.

On the way home I stopped by Lowe's for 50' of 14 gauge speaker wire. Only
20 cents a foot.

As long as I was at BB again, I bought a pair of 3 way Pioneer 6x9's for the
back and a roll of Dynomat. I plan on a custom install for the 6x9's
probably attach a 1" piece of plywood to the rear "cover" that has the Bose
wave holes in it. Then support it somehow.

I put the new speakers in the Bose enclosures and sealed the gap (the
Pioneers are deeper than the enclosure and stick out about 1/4") with
Silicone Caulk and Dynomat. The Silicone will also help to hold the speakers
in place since I had to drill new holes to mount the speakers to the
enclosure. This way they will not vibrate the screws loose. I mounted the
enclosures in the doors and let them sit overnight so the caulk would cure
before putting the door panels on.

Next morning I put the door panels on and finished mounting the radio in the
dash. As I posted Saturday a.m. I couldn't find a wiring diagram on the Bose
stereo. I found the "Hot" and the "Acc On" leads, however I was still
looking for the Antenna lead. I finally checked all the remaining leads for
power. None of them had any power, so I just turned the ignition and radio
ON, then touched the remaining leads with the new radio's Antenna lead. I
found it was the one right next to the two other leads I used.

So far with only 2 speakers, it sounds better than the Bose system ever did.
Granted, the Bose was 6 years old when I bought the car. If I can get the
6x9' mounted properly it should really sound nice. Already with only 2
speakers it is loud enough to drown out the exhaust noise.

I'm done with the custom installation of two 6x9's in the rear deck.

I ran 14 gauge speaker wires to the back.

I cut out a 3/4 inch piece of plywood to fit under the rear deck. I had to
cut out the first of the recessed tray area so that the plywood could be
mounted flush. I will have to get some black felt to cover up the area where
I cut.

I lined up where the 6x9's should go, then cut the holes in the rear deck
and the plywood. I then screwed and glued (Liquid Nails) the rear deck to
the rear deck.

Next, I mounted the speakers to the deck and wired it up. I put the rear
pass through piece back in place. I had left it out for a few months now, it
always slides around and comes out of place. Any ideas on how to keep it in
place? I'm thinking some velcro straps on the back side. That way I can
still easily remove it when needed.

WOW! I was surprised. I thought I would need to do more reinforcements to
the deck But it sounds GREAT just as is!

I still have almost a full roll of Dynomat left. Now I have to decide where
would be the best places to apply it. I'm thinking the rear side of the pass
through piece.

Again, I have pictures. Same deal, if interested, e-Mail me, and I'll send
the link.

By the way, my total cost was just under $500, including a 4 year service
plan on the stereo at Best Buy. Of course the CD/MP3 Stereo was on clearance
from $349 to $219.

For all the threads about removing the Bose system. This has to be the best! Even though it's a year old. Thanks NoRice.
