autobody guys, repainting over old paint??

I am doing body work on my 85 and am looking to repaint it myself. I have repainted a car before and it came out very professional except for my beginners bondo work. anyway I stripped it to bare metal and shot etching primer and then basecoat/clearcoat. This time I wanted to avoid removing the old finish. It is in very good condition except is faded. It is the original finish except for a panel or two. I don't want to have to redo the bodywork since it was done perfectly. I just hit old bondo in a couple areas and dont want to redo it.

My question is can I spray a primer/sealer over bearmetal/repairs that would also stick to the old paint (scuffed clear). Is there recommended product for this? the guy at the paint store that seemed like he wasnt sure said I have to remove all clearcoat in order to prime the car. It was too time consuming and I gave up after removing a couple sqaure feet in an hour and got down to the primer/metal by accident. anyone been down this road before??

thanks

your paint is only as good as whats under it. prep work is everything. so you should at least get thru that before laying any kind of primer or sealer down. good luck man make it look good.

Well im a little confused as to what you did or did not already do, but a primer/sealer combo should spray just fine over the previous finish as long as you have prepped it correctly.

I guess thats what im not understanding, removing the clearcoat and getting down to metal are drastically different things... im not sure how you accidentally sand through the clear, and the paint unless you are using some nasty rough sand paper.

if your old paint is good without any chips, cracks or too deep of a scratch you can just wet sand the car(water with soap) with a 400 grit until it look dull..their is no need to go to bare metal unlest the car has been repainted over too many times or your sanding to do bondo work..If you happen to over sand and hit bondo or bar metal you can either primer that area and then wet sand with 400 grit or you can or you can use a very light coat of primer sealer..with primer sealer you dont need to sand just paint right over it..but remember a very thin coat, cuz its only use is to let the paint stick to it..Paint dont adhere well to metal or bondo...

If you have anymore question just ask?

you only need to get through the clear and base coat to make repairs. You can spray a sealer over lightly scuffed.prepped clear. If your body filler is showing though the paint( hard edges, ripples, waves, dimples, pits and shrinking) then i would advise to sand through the clear and base coat and get to the body filler and fix it. At the same timr, feather out he out the area so ur not digging into one spot of the body that can lead to even more problem's and some primer is not gonna fix that, not even surfacer. You would need a primer filer for that. Then fix the area by feathering it out then maybe skim it with some glaze to get it perfect. Then hit it with some primer surfacer, block, another coat of primer surfacer, block then a coat or two of sealer. You should be ready to paint after you wet sand appopiatly and the whole body too. You cab mask off that area and lay the base down then shoot clear over the whole after that but your gonna need to blend it to the current paint.
