audio questions

Well I just bought a 12" sub and a bandpass box for it. Now the first question is, its a dual voice coil sub...what does that mean exactly? Second, I can't get the damn sub to fit in the box. Do I have to cut the opening where the plexiglass goes or what? Anyone else have this problem? Thanks.

dual voice coil means it has two voice coils. you can wire them in series which will double the impedance, parallel which will half the impedance or wire it as two seperate channels. how you wire it will depend on the amp you have. What size speaker does the box take? If you can't get the speaker through the opening then you probably got too small of a box. Not trying to diss you or anything, but your knowledge level would suggest that you should seek a professional (or someone who does it all the time) to install the equipment.

I got it through. Took alot of pushing and had to take off the rubber ring around the speaker. I got it all installed and it sounds nice. I only ran used one of the voice coils I guess. It doesn't seem to matter and it hits damn hard. Thanks though.

You should check your sub instructions before you only run one voice coil. Usually you have to run both voice coils for the sub to work properly. That's what I was told by Image Dynamics, who make my subs. Either wire it in parallel or series if you have a single channel amp or if you have a two channel amp, run one channel to each coil.

Well how should I run it exactly? Its in a box with only 1 set of outputs, so what, splice each wire into 2 wires so I can run them to each voice coil? Why would it really matter? I mean the voice coils don't have anything to do with how it hits right? Isn't that for like highs from the sub or something? It hits really hard right now.

As I stated before you should get help. The voice coils are a part of what makes the sound. In a sense a speaker is a motor. Imagine useing half of you motor. Not good right. You can wire the voice coils in series or parallel. the type of amp you have will determine how to wire them. What type of amp do you have? (make and model) Keep posting and we will help you get it right.

I have a Jensen 500 watt 2 channel amp. Its in my GFs car right now so I'm not sure on the model. I only am using 1 channel since last time I had it hooked up I could only get one channel to work. The speaker is an audibahn 12" with dual voice coils and is rated at I believe 400watts rms. I know I could use both channels but I'm not sure if the other one works or if I just had a bad connection when it was previously hooked up. What negative effects could not having both voice coils hooked up be? Thanks for the help.

It could cause premature failure. What model is the Sub?

You said the box has only one pair of connectors?
Wire the sub like this: one coil + to next coil -. Connect the two wires that are left to - black connector and + red connector. I know that amp can't handle 2 ohms bridged, so don't even try it!
Make sure the music inputs to the amp are connected correctly, - to -, + to + for each channel, or The RCA's are red to red and black to black.
Make sure the power connections to the amp are correct and of good quality.
Check the manual! It should explain how to connect everything.
Connect the bandpass box's connector - to - of the amp, + to + in the bridged configuration. The manual will show you how to connect it "bridged". It usually is + of one channel to - of the other channel.
It sounds like you are happy with how you have it now, and don't really care about sound quality or longevity, so leave it like it is if you want.
Don't come crying to us when it all ***** up, though.
