Audio Deck which plays WMA/MP3 from DVD

Does anyone know if there is an car audio deck that can play WMA from DVD? I have seen decks that play WMA from CD. That amounts to having about 10 normals CDs on a WMA CD, on a DVD that would be the equivalent of 100 normal CDs. Basically all the music I would care to listen to would always be in the player.

Also from the current set of audio decks that do WMA which ones do you like? I am not interested in the 'movies' on the face plate type stuff but more ease of use and durability.

I dont need XM/Sirius

I currently have a ~4 year old Kenwood which has the nice feature of flipping the front panel and becoming a completly blank black surface when it is off. It looks like the current generation of decks dont offer that.

Deck must be standard size to fit in FD.

Any suggestions welcome.

A DVD is solely recorded using MPEG-2 encoding. What you are wishing for is not possible.

How big of a deal is it to carry a few CDs in the car?

Unfortunately I've never seen anything like that, but it would be damn cool to burn my entire MP3 collection to a DVD-R and use it in the car

The high end sony head units have a memory stick slot. I think this is a better solution. You can transfer music from the computer to the player without having to burn cds. It makes it much easier to add songs and discard those you don't want to hear anymore.

Ok so there aren't any DVD-R capabable decks on the market. That was my question.

Those video DVD players could be trivially converted to just play music in MP3 or WMA instead of MPeg-2. But I guess the media companies wouldn't like it for fear of piracy. (As if it really makes it any worse than a CD-R).

I am sure it is just a matter of time though. If anyone spots one let me know.

Sony memory sticks dont hold more info than a regular CD-R and I dont have sony memory stick capability on my PC to create the content.

I just had a though, you can by a DVD reader for your PC for $49, it would even fit in the car and has a volume control and headphone out. I guess it wouldn't play in the WMA format though.

another option is going with a computer in the car, quite a few companies have 12volt systems out now, but you're lookin at droppin over $2000 easy, but that would definitly play dvd-r data discs

You can get something like this pretty cheap. There are many brands out there, and they are in 10-15-20 and 40 gig. They run from 150 to 400 bucks. The archos for instance fits in the ash tray.

The only thing you need to do is get a tuner with an Aux in module. JVC's have them (pretty cheap price). You can also get a wireless FM transmitter, but the quality will not be as good as with an Aux in.

the best part, you can take it from car to car, bring to the office and use at your house. very convenient. IT aslo functions as an external hard drive. The one I have is like this one, so its a Still camera, Video Cam, Mp3 player, Mp3 recorder, hard drive, etc.

I am thinking of buying a portable dvd player. The ones that are a screen and player in one. Then carefully detatch the screen from the actual player (will viod warranty) then put the screen in my dash and the player in my glovebox. It will save me alot of money and will be able to play all the dvd/cd's off the player. I also want to get one with buttons next to the screen so i dont have to open the glovebox to change songs. Then ill buy a normal cheap deck with just a radio. Any one have any other ideas how i can get the radio?

Just get a 40 GB iPod and one of the new Alpine decks that connects to the iPod. It will let you connect your ipod anywhere in the car, lets you see and choose the music from the deck and charges the ipod at the same time.
