ARGHH!! gonna hurt my dad.... emblems

Hey all... I mentioned to my dad that I wanted to take off my broken Rx-7 Emblem on my FD. So he went and tried to do it himself... well see he pulled it off, and then with the crap left on it ( the glue or whatever) he freaking used this stuff called assetone!!!! it made the glue ( hopefully, could be the paint partially ) smear all over the place..... how the hell do I Get this off? do I need to get a new paint job in order to cover it up???? and whats the best way to get the mazda emblem off on the back too( the written on ) ??

pics soon

I would suggest trying some wax/cleaner type product on the glue. Maybe polishing compound. I think the Mazda emblem is plastic, and is attached using two prongs that snap into holes in the plastic.

maybe a good compound applied with a machine would do it.

speaking of dads. When I let my dad drive my car, he ended up getting pulled over and written a ticket for no front place, and tinted windows...

Your Dad screwed you worse than he screwed your Mom.

Once, my Dad got brake fluid on my fender and left blotches all over the paint on a car I had. I coulda killed him. But then I remembered all the nice things he did for me and I was finally able to get over it. You gotta keep telling yourself that he was trying to help. You're still gonna be steamed for a couple of days, though.

lol...while we're telling dad horror stories...

My dad was trying to help me take the compressor housing off my primary turbo, *without* a set of snap ring pliers...after about 20 minutes of foul language, the housing comes flying off under the power of a 18" Craftsman screwdriver...taking most of the compressor wheel with it!

Now, about six months later, I have purchased nearly everything needed for a single conversion...just to turn around and sell it all for a considerable loss...the motor just went back in the car last week with stockers attached. Life's a bitch sometimes...

PPG or 3M makes a product for professional detailers and paint shops called "Prepsall" or something like that. It's a wax remover that will take that stuff off no problem. If you find some do NOT use any force when applying it, just rub it on with a rag very lightly and it should come right off. I once rubbed too hard on my old Jeep and it took the paint right off down to the metal!

WD-40 is a good adhesive remover. while it isn't made for paint, as long as you clean and wax the area afterwards you should be fine. don't let it sit on there too long!!

Try something like Goof Off! (Pep Boys) or another similar adhesive remover. Auto stores have this type of stuff.

My dad ran the front of my old Talon into a high curb, didn't damage the frame but tore off half the front bumper of the body kit :/ Duct tape and bra time! hehe.

It also seems to help if you warm up the sticky crap with a hairdryer or carefully with a heatgun before trying to remove it.

I used a bit of gasoline to rub my sticky crap off after I removed the emblems, then immediately waxed it. ya, ya, gasoline is a bit harsh, but that is all I could find in my garage that day and I was too lazy to goto the store and buy anything else.

Sorry, but this is the worst piece of advice I've seen in awhile...

WD-40 is a penetrating lubricant not an adhesive remover. Use 3M adhesive remover, or something similar intended for removing adhesive residue, but DON'T use WD-40.

WD-40 will penetrate sheet metal and other materials, and if you ever have to repaint the panel in the future, you'll have trouble with fisheyes in the paint and will likely have to take it down to bare metal to remove the contaminant.

Do it once, do it right, use the right tool for the right job. Get some 3M adhesive remover and don't just grab whatever happens to be under the sink or on the shelf in the garage. OK?

I'll agree it's not "good" for paint, but have you ever used commercial adhesive remover? (ie Hi-Temp brand, made specifically for cars) They are both petrol based solvents (i think). besides he already used acetone, a little WD isn't gonna do much that it didn't already do.

to get rid of sticker crap after you remove a sticker..or whatnot, I always use "Goo Gone", to get rid of the residue.

I happen to love my father's ability to kill cars. You see, my beloved RX-7 was once his. I bought it from him after he had given up trying to fix it.

In a related note, I never let him drive the car without me!

I let my dad drive my Turbo II to work once....

He comes back, and goes "wow, this car has got some power" ... "the light was turning yellow, so I just gassed it, and blew through the intersection"

Pretty sweet

I guess anything would seem fast compared to his car, a mustang

3M Adhesive Remover. Comes in a white, rectangular one pint can. Cuts through sticker residue, gum, wax, etc. Try a big auto parts store, Home Depot, or an auto paint supply shop.

...and good old Wal Mart, in both the pint can as a liquid and an aerosol spray!
