another sub in the storage bin question (2nd gen).

okay i searched and read a bit on the topic. i just bought a turbo II that i'm gonna build up and a system is something i want. i'm very clean and so of course no junk will be going in those bins. and so of course it's a waste of space to me. i see the arguement about sound cancellation etc. but what i'm wondering is what if i had a box made to go in the place of the storage bins (and still have the top of it somewhat level with the floor in the rear) but kind of angle towards the rear a bit? anyone see a problem with that?

now i'm wanting to possibly go with some 10's....kicker is preferred. guess i'd need an amp and a capacitor as well. how much do those capacitor's cost? i've never really done much stereo work at all. not sure what all the box could be made out of or the best configuration but wanting the lightest material possible being that i'm more into racing than i am the system. i want it to sound good but not trying to win a stereo competition here (it's for me, not everyone else). just want it to sound nice. no $10k system for me, thanks!

i haven't really had a chance to look at my car much (took it to my parents today to leave it there for 6 months cause i'll be gone for a school and saving for mod money) but does the storage bin compartments just come out? anyway, what's my best options here? thanks for anyone that could gimme some advice here although i know the storage bin topic has been discussed many times. it's just that i'd want mine angled to the rear a bit instead of just pointing straight up so i'd probably be different right? thanks!

Hi Scott,

sorry for my bad English, but what is a "storage bin compartment"?
I do not have a 3nd gen., I have the last gen.

Well, I'll tell you what you need in general to built up a small, no 10k$ but good sounding installation.
First, get a better headunit with pre-outs. I like when the design and illumination fits the car, but that's not important.
I would get a cd-tuner, maybe you like MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3) capability?
Then I would propose a 4 ch amp with active dividing networks. Around 100 watts RMS per channel. High-pass for the front and low-pass for the sub.
A cap is not needed. Only 500+ RMS. Of course it's not wrong at lower powers, but you better spend money for the other stuff.
E.g. for y solid power cable. I do not have your AWG gauge things in mind. Should have about 16-25 mm_2 what is about 1/3 inch dia.
The short ground wire same dia!!!
Then you should install a good front system. I would take a 2way with 6,5" midbass. When the door does not allow that, you can built a door board.
The subwoofer will be briged on the ch 3+4 of the amp. So you'll get a higher power output (half the impedance at each channel).
Where you install the box and what kind of box (sealed/vented/bandpass) you like depends on your taste.
How about the spare tire space? You can make a box with fibre glass that totally fits into your spare tire.
If you want a small box, miost JL Audio subs work great with this conditions.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I hope I'll be able to understand.

well, already planning on the head unit and all. so no worry there. just wondering about the box....

if i slanted the box to point towards the rear, think that it would sound good? since it's not gonna be pointing straight up and all, ya know? sound's not gonna be bouncing up top and all over. just straight back, and then forward.....well i would think anyway but i'm not a stereo buff. just wondering about sound. that's about it.

don't want it in my spare tire area. as soon as i do that, knowing my luck, i'll have a flat. so not even gonna go that route. so what's the thought on the storage bin idea?

Nice looking stereo, but I wouldn't put the amps where he does. They would get too hot.

i like the way he did his. but imagine it the same way but a bit higher in the front so that the sound would be projected towards the rear. and then maybe mount the amp on the front side of the box instead of near the spare. other than that, keep everything else (the capacitor, fuse block, speakers, etc.) the same way this guy did it. any thoughts? and i'd still have plenty of trunk space......

Ah, now I see:
The spare tire is not "flat" in the FC, funny!
The storage bin means the place after the front seats?
Of course you can use this space for a box.
We can't hear were deep frequencies come from. Sodoesn't affect much where you put the sub(s).
Be sure that your desired woofer(s) fit(s) the box volume and the kind (closed/ported...).
You can check on my website:

Only in German, sorry. But maybe you can have it translate by e.g.

Don't waste too much money in the rears. Better buy better fronts. No rears or just Coaxials.

rgs,
Tobias
