The FD also shares window and side-view mirror controls with the 626.

I'b be interrested if the Gauge cluster can be mounted in the US Left hand Gauge Pod... (the Black Outer Housing) and if the plugs reach, some of them have very little slack... from the looks of things the Holes for Speedo Tach, etc.. are the same... allthough I wonder if for the boost gauge yu need a sender or if a nipple fits on the back....

i imagine the boost gauge reads off the map sensor. even if the whole cluster doesnt fit you could probably remove and swap the individual gauge assemblies. they just screw on to the circuit board inside.

I have the 98 fd j-spec cluster.. The entire cluster will not fit.. which is pretty abvious.. but the cluster itself will fit perfect.. I heard that the 99+ cluster will have some issues.. I'm not sure what the differences are.. What I would do is get the RZ cluster and swap out face and the boost and install on to the 98 or older cluster..

sorry.. I should of been more clear..

What I meant was that the outer shell of the cluster and the hood will not fit onto left hand FD.. but you could unscrew the gauge cluster itself and swap with your existing cluster..

When you take the clust assembly, its in three parts.. The hood of the cluster, the front cover, and gauges.. I meant the gauges are interchangeable until 1998.. 1999 and on, the harness is slightly different.. well, that's what I heard at least.. I know for fact, jdm 1998 cluster works with our FD.. except your speed will read in Km/Hr instead MPH. But somehow, all are correct.. when my cluster reads 120KmPH, I am in fact going about 75mph.. which is about correct speed..

I hope I make sense and also giving you helpful info.. If not, I'm sorry..

Hopefully I can assist here, seeing as I just went through a conversion to the 99 gauge cluster. NOTE: the picture you refer to is to the later 2000-2002 Spirit edition with white faces. I am refering to the 99Spec gauge cluster JDM with black faces. Differences are noted below.

Problems:

1) Boost gauge is non-functional.
2) Backlighting is Green - not orange
3) Replacing the speedo with a 180KPH speedo caused errors in speed because of the voltage differences out of the ECU.
4) No cruise control in Japan...so don't expect to be able to tell if your cruise is working if you replace your current tach with the new tach.
5) The lettering of the 99 gauge cluster is italic font.

I ended up swapping gauges themselves into my 94 cluster and using the 99 trim plate (with black surrounds...instead of chrome) ... this made for the best trade-off. I ended up using the MPH speedo and the 94 Oil pressure gauge. Everything else went in to my current cluster plug n play and worked like a champ.

Photos soon...

Reese

Thanks Herblenny!

96-20 is backlit in green
The Measurement of speed shouldnt matter AT ALL

99-02 was available in White or Black, the SPIRIT R was ONLY available in a VERY light grey almost white, but not white. Also it had the SpiritR emblem on them.

u could either buy the entire unit from Mazda japan, or try to find it at the yahoo action of Japan, and one best way is to DIY with those white one from ebay and then print out the spirit R logo and change the bulb to what ever color you want

MAZDASPEED---WHITE OR BLUE-- I didnt find the white ones on JTs site, but here are the BLUE ones http://www.jt-imports.com/Mazdaspeed...auge%20kit.jpg

RE-Amemiya--WHITE http://www.jt-imports.com/RE%20white%20gauges%20kit.jpg

PANSPEED--WHITE OR BLACK http://www.jt-imports.com/DSCF0244.JPG

JT-Imports has all of them. Im a moron when it comes to pics, so I posted links.

Most of the pics are kind of small. Im sure if you want to see bigger ones, you can e-mail him and ask.

ok would people be interested in something like the blue ones in the thread above but made to look like the 99+ gauges? (with 0 @ 6oclock). how much interest would there be in a replica 99+ gauge (black or white... im not sure how difficult a spirit r one would be to do)? ive done a little experimentation...changing the needle position is not too hard... *only thing is you would loose your green cruise controll indicator. also im assuming that people would want MPH on the speedo, and to keep our oil pressure meeters right? im still looking into a solution to keep the cruise indicator, but it would be a signifigantly more complicated thing to do.

please let me know if

A) people are interested in 99+ gauge face conversions at all (and what color face (white or black.....i will post pics if you havent seen the 99 styles).....also what color illumination (red/green) would people be interested in, keep in mind in japan they have both and if we were to want green, we would have to change all the other lights in the car.

B) how important the green "cruise" illumination in the tach would be to people

thanks, heath

are you thinking about doing a group buy? also how will you be able to have mph instead of kmh? if they have mph in smaller letters under the kmh that would also be ok, if its cheaper.

not a group buy on the units from japan... im talking about having gague faces *made* to whatever design people want. mazdaspeed wants like $1K for their blue 0@ 6 oclock conversion gagues, and the Mazda 99+ gauges have a boost gauge that doesnt work w/out alot of mods, and also they display in KPH. Im looking into a few companys that would manufacture these for me, and im trying to see if there is anyone that would actually want them.

this would be a conversion kit for the gauges that are already in your car. -heath

Hell man there must me 1001 places you can buy them already, I mean they arent REPLICA 99spec gauges, but everyone will know anyway since NO KMs, so whats the point? Whats the difference in just getting some regular white face gauges, or just the cover for them?
