Question 99 front end plate holder removal?

I have the 99 front end about to be put on and want to have the hideous plate holder removed. The bumper is at a very reputable body shop right now that does alot of custom work. What needs to be done is the plate holder has to be cut out and the resulting hole needs to be filled by welding in a piece of material. They are having trouble finding a suitable material that will hold up and not crack. Another concern is warpage over time which could leave a "halo" where the plate holder used to be. Specifically they need to know what product name works the best with this bumper plastic. If anyone has had this done could you please contact me?

Talking

yo ihor whats up
i was looking at my old magazine a couple of
days ago because i remember them working on
the sport compact rx7 i need some help with my turbo
solenoids anyway they are really talking about the
99 spec bumper how they well; Quote

"after an ordeal
of stripping, pounding, pulling and ramming too gruesome
to commit to film, the front of our rx-7 began to rematerialize, but with a
fresh face from the japan-only '99 rx-7.one of the most artistically demanding tasks in the reconstruction was the removal of the groutesque license-holding appendage from the new 7's nose"

it basically explains all materials and step by step action.it can be useful to your body shop.

i will bring the magazine on saturday to the meet at hooters.

I think I have that issue somewhere. I'll see if I can find it but bring it with you anyway.

Thanks,
Ihor

if they really are reputable, shouldn't they be able to figure this one out on their own???

For future use, anyone know where I can pick up old issues?

I don't have that issue anymore, but didn't they take Shiv's old bumper skin and cut out a piece of it to weld into the hole where the plate holder on the new bumper was?

Hey, when your shop figures it out, post how they did it. Some pix would be nice too!

license plate removal

i don't want to be negative but trying to remove the license plate holder is at best futile. I've attempted this twice at a great expense and many hours at the body shop. However, if you attempt this here are some tips.
The best material to use is a piece of polyurethane from another front fascia that resembles the curve of the 99 J-spec front end. One from a Miata would work. When you cut the hole make sure the bumper has some temporary support or else the whole thing gets really flimsy and is hard to get back into shape.
I don't care how good the shop is the chance of the modified front end fitting right (no uneven gaps, warpage etc..) is atbest slim. I finally gave in and bought another fascia and left it as is. Oh PS.i've personally seen Shivs car and bumper, and while the article in SCC was great his car looks like ****. The bumper is so wavy i could ride it with a board. However if yours comes out great please let me know and if you have more ?'s E me back. By the way i have one of those front ends still ansd it's for sale does have some slight damage to it but it is fixable.

reply to my reply

i don't know about feed but anything other than polyurethane is a waste of mony CF included it all cracks as soon as you tap it or hit a pothole.
stick with the OEM bumper
