Question 3rd gen Stock Stereo grief...

Really stupid, or at least embarassing question. Thanks to recent relocations (car in and out of moving vans and storage), along with some misguided help from a friend, I now have a stereo displaying ERR. I feel confident that the power was interupted enough times without the code being entered that the stereo has kicked into its security mode. Is it now truly useless, or is there away around this? I only want to maintain the integrity of the original equipment. My local Mazda dealer was no help at all. Any thoughts or advice?

Did you input a password originally?

Refer to your owner's manual for instructions on how to activate the radio. There's a default password if you didn't input one yourself.

I bought the car used. The original owner said that he never inputted a password. Following the instructions in the manual says that you get 3 chances to put in the correct code. After that it locks up, assuming that you are trying to steal it without the code, I guess. I am also guessing that power was interupted enough times on the car that the stereo thought it was being stolen. I hadn't tried to do anything to the stereo until a recent reconnect on the battery resulted in the my stereo showing the E-R-R message. I think I'm screwed, but maybe someone knows another method. Thanks for the feedback.
