Glad we've got an expert in the house...

DuPont ChromaLusion (not "chrome illusion") is just one of the manufacturers of color-shifting paints. Every paint manufacturer has their own line now, from Sherwin Williams "MultiTones" to House of Kolor's "Kameleon Kolors", to BASF's "Extreme Rainbow" colors. They are all commonly referred to as "chameleon" colors because of the color shift at different viewing angles.

All do the same thing, regardless of brand, so there's no difference if you buy the color from Sherwin Williams or DuPont or House of Kolor, as long as the color range is the same. All are priced approximately the same, with the average being about $250 per pint.

The upside is that the color is mixed with reducer 1:1 to make a sprayable quart. The downside is that they cover very poorly, requiring 4-5+ coats of color to make sure that the base color (usually black) doesn't show through. Previously, gray was used by DuPont as a base coat, but it produced a milky gray sidetone at some viewing angles, especially in direct sunlight, since you were seeing the gray basecoat through the color coat. The cost per pint and the poor coverage are why chameleon paint jobs are generally very expensive.

Unfortunately, ICE_Pilot, no one makes a black that changes to another color. Your only option with black is add a course metallic or a mica tint to give it a silvery tint or sidetone in the color you're looking for when viewed from some angles.

That is AArotary's RX-7, by the way, with a new R-Magic wide body kit and HRE wheels.

that rx7 is painted with a paint by DuPont called chromalusion

http://www.angelfire.com/biz/fapco/chromalusion.htm

i'm sure if you do a google search you can find out even more info. you can't do a silver black in similar fashion, although it would look sharp.

Then they added red mica to the color coat or red pearl to the clear coat. Regardless, there are no "chameleon" colors which turn black. Or white, for that matter.
