1991 Convertible Stereo Suggestions

The head rest speakers are not working correctly in my Convertible. The previous owner tried to rewire the amp and I don't think he had a clue. Does any one have a pin out of the connectors for this amp?
I am also concidering just upgrading the entire system and would more than welcome suggestions for units and lay outs others have used in this car.
Thanks,
Mike

Heres what I did in mine, check here

https://www.rx7club.com/vforums/show...threadid=30753

Gonna snap more pics soon, but heres the deck (check attach). Gonna get one of the doors, and the weird *** funky sub enclosure LOL By the way no subs in the trunk, kept all the space!

I put 2 10's in it but I think Im gonna go to 1, its got a lot of bass..
I used to be in that heavy bass stuff, but I like a more of a little impact to fill my music.

I think the radio is the same as that used in the 89 convertible, which I own. I have the workshop manual and can get the pin out connections to you.

Regarding my set up, I just installed a new audio system since my OEM head unit was stolen. Here's what I put in:

- Head Unit: Sony CDX-M770 (black panel display)
- Door Speakers: MBQuart RKC-116 (6.5" coax)
- Under Dash Speakers: MBQuart RKC-110 (4" coax)
- Head Rest Speakers: Stock
- Subwoofer: Rockford Fosgate 10" HE2
- Front/Sub Amplifier: Phoenix Gold XS6600 6 channel amp
- Head rest speaker Amp: Stock, using stock controls

Everything is hidden - the speakers are behind the factory grills and the amp and sub are under the spare tire cover. The amp is so big that there is no way I can fit a spare tire under there but, since this tire was stolen, it's no big deal ).

Aftermarket stereos

Are there trim kits available to fill or cover the space of the factory radio? It looks like a double din type unit would fit as a replacement. I know the factory headrest speakers are not the greatest but I would really like the feature (maybe a little better speaker is out there somewhere) and keep the volume controls on the console. I hope someone out there has had success doing this.

Yeah there are kits available, thats an AAMP kit there, multi purpose mazda kit (AAMP=Bests kits as they are called) . Metra also makes kits for them too. Shouldnt be hard to find the kit.

The deck pictured in my 88 vert, is a Pioneer DEHP730, the door speakers are Alpine A series DDD Component 6 1/2 and tweeters.

The crossovers are inside the door, the tweets are in the door's air vents. The 6 1/2's are mounted on a custom 3/4" MDF adapter plate (traced the factory speaker and cut it out )

The amp is under the passenger seat, its a Alpine MRPT-130, a small little amp with ***** LOL Powers the subs..

The deck drives the components in the doors, and the headrest speakers.

I tried utilizing the headrest speaker controls but I didnt really get a sound from this that was much better than stock. The output from the Pioneer was much better. To attenuate the volume from them I just use to front to rear fader on the Pioneer.

Only other thing I did was seal and seperate the 4 to 5" gap at the rear of the spare tire wheel to stop cancellation. I knew I needed to do this when I would open the trunk I had more bass when it was closed...

Other than that I installed 2 door lock actuaters for power locks, installed a keyless entry module intergrated to the factory alarm. Also a power window module was installed to ch. 2 of the keyless, so I can roll windows up when locking the doors if I choose to.

As mentioned above, I am using the head rest speakers with the stock console controls. But I only need them when the top is down anyway. The MBQuarts I am using are fantastic speakers for creating a good, enveloping sound image in the car - most of the time I don't even use the head rest speakers. When I do use them, I am surprised at how little they add to the sound.

But, like you, I wanted to keep the headrest speakers. The installer I used figured out that the head rest speaker amp uses a speaker level input, not a line level input. Therefore, it is definitely possible to keep the head rest speakers with an aftermarket radio. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise!

If you run wires to back and hook up speaker level there it is speaker level input, but at the deck its lowlevel..

You have to decide what kind of system you want to create, and how much you are willing to spend.

Do you want it to look OEM, or do you want to go competition quality(but don't have to compete)?

Are you into more bass or do you want a clear crisp sound stage?

You can take a look at what I've done with mine, as well as others, and use it as a starting point to get you going in the right direction.

I used mine to compete in IASCA, but that shouldn't deter you from getting the same results in a "non" competition car.

Hey All,
Thanks for all the suggestions and information. I agree with crosbo, the roll bars on 1BADRX7 car are the best I've seen. I doubt that they are available execpt from a custom shop. The only aftermarket roll bar I have found can be seen at http://www.fc3s.org/rollbar.html crosbo, you may want to check this on out. Hopefully I'll be making some progress on my sound system will all the suggestion and great set up I've seen. THANKS!
