Wow, I'm shocked. I've seen tons of red FDs with significant fading, but only on the metal parts of the body, just like mine. In the case of my 93 R1, it still looks quite nice with a fresh coat of wax, but only stays nice looking for 2-3 months.

what are the 3 stages of a VR paint job?

I know CYM is a tricoat, whats the 3 in VR?
Or are you using a different name for a process by saying 3 stage?

base red, then clear, am I missing something in between?

and for the record- my car is single stage black and it blows most clearcoat paintjobs away.

I would guess there is a translucent purple or maroon layer or something like that to darken it up, it's not as bright of a red compared to the reds of many manufacturers.

the vintage red I sprayed was not listed in the books as a tri coat, CYM was, but not the red.

2900 is very reasonable. i wouldnt try to haggle on the price as they may cut corners if you do. i have had my car repainted twice in the past 5 years. each time it was a little over $3k. i feel my paint is pretty much perfect and that 3k is a good price.

i say stick with what you know.

Yes, it's a translucent purple and I would recommend leaving it out if doing an overall paint job.
