Useless search function

Why is the search function on this site so pathetic? Been this way since I've been a member. Today I entered "FD Battery Relocation" and got like 50 pages of threads on everything from red/black interior to HID headlights. It's like, if it lists every f***ing thread on the site it will cover what you want.

RW-7 10-24-11 11:24 AM

Hi Audie.
Sorry you are having troubles. It can be a pain sometimes.
I usually go to advanced search, then in the upper left type in your search, and search for titles only. Otherwise you will get alot of junk. Good luck.

What i do is on google I type whatever i want to search on the forums followed by site:rx7club.com
look like this " FD won't start site:rx7club.com "

a2dadamm 10-24-11 01:29 PM

yeah u have to do the advanced and select titles only or you will get every thread that has mentioned any part of what your searching for.

exactly what i do, works great

bigdv519 10-24-11 06:01 PM

Yes. Do advanced search...also watch out for short words. Try typing in "AC Removal" and your only going to get threads with the key word "removal"..."AC" will not be included. You just have to learn how to make the search function work for you.

Yep, I do this, too. Makes searching much more pleasant. :D

vrx8 10-24-11 08:42 PM

I always find what im searching for so works great for me

Tools are only as good as the User's skills and intellect.

eazyb 10-26-11 09:43 AM

I second this, maybe you guys should revise it instead of insulting his "intellect".For example:I can't find the answer to a question after going through tonnes of what I thought to be relevant threads. So I post a question, only to never actually see it up or be told to "search the forums"....Kinda frustrating, usually I don't even bother asking, therefore nullifying the forums usefulness.

mar3 11-01-11 11:35 PM

We normally do but when someone starts cursing about the website, the gloves have to come off. We don't want such members here and rotary engines generally don't respond well to such rebuilders, either. Patience and a cool head are necessary in all things RX-7.

You ask nice, we guide and develop. You want to be a jerk?

Get ready.

dblboinger 11-02-11 12:18 AM

Well, I've posted questions on this before and guess what I got. ZIP, ZILCH, NADA!It's like the only way to get a response is to piss somebody off. Your comment is a perfect example.

gracer7-rx7 11-02-11 03:55 AM

You could try reading the stickies. Here is one:

Here is the quote from that link:

I like the search function on this site...it even highlights the words you search in threads. If you wanna complain you should try searching for stuff on other sites. HUGEEEE PITA.

RotaryEvolution 11-03-11 01:11 PM

if i'm looking for an exact phrase of words use the quotation marks("")inside the search.

example: how to not blow up an RX7, aka "how not to blow up an RX7"

this will refine your search to exactly that wording.

mkarwowski 11-05-11 11:54 PM

search has worked good for me so far

mar3 11-06-11 10:27 PM

...and that goes right back to what I was saying...User Error. The guy above has two posts and he's having no problems. A Forum Vendor has figured out how to make the search engine work even better for him and then there's this:

^there is. when u click the search button it drops down and it's at the bottom of that.

NCross 12-20-11 10:23 AM

The only thing that bothers me sometimes is that it changes your words. Some small words/ forum lingo like s4, s5, t2 etc get deleted automatically which can really throw off your results when your looking for a specific result. Other than that it's not too bad

confab 12-20-11 01:14 PM

This topic comes up on dang near every forum. Methinks your qualms are with the wrong people. Go explain to vBulletin that the vast majority of people cannot use their search feature properly. Complaining to the admin(s)/mods here is not the proper way to get action. However, you could do some research and suggest plugins the admin(s) might try for better SEO, easier parsing of input, or something along those lines. Or, you could do as others have suggested and learn to work with the tools provided. In any case, a nasty response from either an admin, a mod or a regular member was not what you were looking for, so try to help, learn to work with it, or just do not complain.

oHenry 12-24-11 04:54 PM

Im on multiple forums using the vb search, and most of the time, it's difficult to find something specific without playing around with the search parameters and even then its still not easy.
So, as stated in the post above mine, I believe it is just a design flaw of the vb system and not the forum's.

misterstyx69 12-24-11 06:11 PM

I just punched THIRD GEN Battery relocation (by mistake) into my Google slot(instead of the Search)..
I got THIS:http://www.stanford.edu/~sunid/battery/

tbleezy 12-24-11 10:50 PM

this is the most informative sight that i have found to date

i love this site...

mar3 12-26-11 11:40 AM

That you love the site's search engine...yes, I concur. I never have a problem finding what I'm looking for and it's even easier now that I tried the "Tip of the Day" from Karack... ;)

misterstyx69 12-26-11 05:07 PM

I find that if you 'word' it differently then you can get some results.
Instead of S4 use Series 4.
OMP: oil metering pump.
and so on.
The forum has so many threads that eventually you will get the answer, and if you are too Hyped to use the search on the Form then use Google.

psunitro 02-03-12 08:42 PM

Search works for me..

2jzge PWRD 02-15-12 09:52 AM

Yea it's not working for me, and hasn't been for a couple days. Even 'blown' turned up zero results.

JasonS 04-28-12 05:03 PM

I have fought and fought with this search function today and I get:

Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.
Is anyone correcting this issue?

-Jason

X2, I searched for words on the page I was on and it still said no results. :icon_tdow

JasonS 04-30-12 02:26 PM

Stop telling us to Google. We have, (had) a great search function on this site and it's not been working for several days. Who has access to look into this? The site seems very non-personal and dis-connected...

Vierte 04-30-12 03:07 PM

Over the years, it seems that the most common responses to complaints about the search function are:

"you are an idiot"
"you are doing it wrong"
Fill in own personal insult: "____________________"

This time the search does seem to be down.I know you all don't like the idea of using google... but googling this:

rx7 site:rx7club.com

works really well for searching the forum. It finds results efficiently, accurately, and doesn't experience the same problems that the trusty rx7club search function experiences.

staticguitar313 04-30-12 03:22 PM

The search engine for this site has sucked for years, however, it also has to do with half-wits making thread title's that don't have to do with the info in the thread like "HELP!" or "check this out". Certainly doesn't help when searching.

JasonS 04-30-12 09:19 PM

Woohoo...it works!
Thank you whoever is in control. :)

JoshB120 05-01-12 06:02 PM

for sure for sure

xXGslseSleeperXx 06-12-12 02:41 PM

it still really sucks

xXGslseSleeperXx 06-12-12 02:44 PM

and it still doesnt accept numbers(even spelled) on this useless piece of shit!!!!!
