definitely, I greatly appreciate the feedback, no hard feelings at all.

The things most mentioned will get shifted up the priority list so by all means speak up

I have a new release about ready to go up just needs a few more small bugs fixed that I've found, will probably take another week or so since I'm busy right now with a contract job that is sucking most my time up. This next release should have a bit better performance, Jacob Cartmill reported a slowdown that would occur after running for a short period and I'm pretty sure I've identified and corrected that one, next release will have the fix applied.

I just created the boot floppy but I'm having a little trouble, when I turn on the laptop and let it run through the bios it starts to boot off the floppy then I get L 04 04 04 04 04 04 04 04 04 40 10 04 04 04 04 04 going across the screen and the floppy drive is making some funky noises. the 04's keep popping up across the screen, I let it go till it got about have way down the page and finally gave up (that was about 2-3minutes) Is that the boot process and I simply was not patient enough or did I miss a step?

I'm really excited to run this, just need a little help!

Thank you
BigAl...

Thats not normal, thats an error from the boot loader, 04 is sector not found, 10 is CRC error, your floppy disk may be bad, try making a new one with a different floppy disk, preferably a new one. It can also help to perform the rawrite process a few times in a row before using the disk, at least that has helped me in the past with touchy floppies when doing linux installations.

If problems persist with a different disk there may be issues with the floppy drive, sometimes people don't use their drive for a really long time and it gets dusty, trying it a few times and blowing it out can help.

When it works properly you only wait around ~10 seconds before e6tuner loads up, can vary based on the laptop but it's certainly nowhere near a minute.

It really needs a good floppy disk, because it fills the disk and has to load data off practically the entire thing, a disk you thought was good from previous use could have problems without you knowing it because the data you previously stored on it only used a small area of the disk and you never accessed the bad part until now.

good luck and thanks for giving it a try

I actually tried two different floppies (both fresh out of the box) neither worked for me, I'll try writing the file a couple of times with rawwrite. I want to see this work, I'm very excited to see this.

if they were both new I would look to the drives being used, if you can't get it to work there will be a new release soon that supports booting from anything your bios supports, so you could use a cd instead for example.

the first disk i used did that but it said L 10 10 10 10 10 10.......tried a different floppy and it fixed it. if nothing else, download the image file again and keep trying different floppies, this is why i am sooo hurting for a cd image

For those of you having problems booting from the floppy, the best advice I can give is to try another floppy disk preferably a new one, and if that fails give me some time to get the next release ready to go out. I will be redoing the boot system, new kernel and a different approach that will support booting from cd or whatever your bios supports, I suspect it will resolve most of the problems people are having currently. I apologize for the slow response and lengthy period since the last release, my contract job has me busy these days, I should catch a break soon that will let me get some wokr done here.

Thanks for the feedback and time spent giving it a try.

13th release is out, some bugfixes and this one has an ISO version that you can burn to CD. The floppy version has also been improved, load time is much shorter now with the use of a compressed filesystem so theres less data to be read from the disk @ boot.

Get it here:
http://pengaru.com/downloads/e6tuner/beta/

the .img file is floppy image, .iso ISO for CD burning.

readme.txt has been updated to reflect the .iso file support, some quick instructions for burning with cdrecord in linux are provided, you are on your own in windows but it shouldnt be anything special... if you've burned CD's before it should be cake, I can burn & mail copies on request for a small fee if desired, just PM me.

Next release should have 486 support and low res modes improved, though I'm sure there are only a few people crazy enough to try it on 486's so I doubt thats too exciting.

Also planned for next release is graphical status when the software is busy 'talking' with the ECU, like when you alter a huge selection of the map... it's kindof confusing right now since it just pauses while writing the changes over the relatively slow serial link.

Enjoy, and as always let me know of any problems you have! Those of you who had problems using the floppy version before, try this one, the boot system is quite different now and I think it will fix most of your problems.

Just got some feedback from a windows user, the ISO burned flawlessly using "nero" which apparently comes with most cdr drives. No problems booting from the cd on both his workstation and laptop, this is making me jealous of all you guys with newish laptops, mine only has a floppy drive .

Just when you thought it was safe to burn a copy, I pull this ****.

New release! pre14 is out and available at the same place as usual in both floppy image and ISO forms:
http://pengaru.com/downloads/e6tuner/beta/

Small bug fix and everything but the driving gauges page got a new font that is easier to read IMO.

pre17 is out, it has the new more visible gauge needles:
http://pengaru.com/downloads/e6tuner/beta/

as always, readme.txt has been updated for the new release, same procedure as before to write a floppy image or burn a cd.

I disabled the associative data I intended to get in for pre17 so I could get the new gauge needles out to you guys sooner, I still need to work on the user interface for the associative data before it will be useful. Next release should have the selection-follows-in-follow-mode annoyance fixed, and associative data (also known as map trace).

Some videos demonstrating *customizable* gauges in action, pre18 will have the ability to change the layout of the driving gauges in realtime! A later version will permit you to save the changes so they are used as the default (basically waiting on USB storage support).

direct link to the movies:

Do ANY of the other standalones support fully customizable driving gauges?

I tried using version 15 on my IBM Thinkpad 600E - after asking all the options (display mode, wideband com port, etc.) the loading screen (big 'gauge'?) would flicker across the screen for a second and then disappear. It then said that there was a communication problem (not in those words...) before flipping very quickly back to the start again (display mode). It will keep doing this until you run out of patience (about three times for a desperate me ) Any ideas?

EDIT - one thing I forgot to mention... When in windows I have the option of turning off the serial port to save power. Is it possible that the default setting for this is 'off', and it is turned on only when going into windows, at which point the "IBM Thinkpad configuration" program runs by default?

I did some quick research into this model laptop and found quite a few pages via google regarding serial ports on this model laptop. It appears the internal mode, serial, and IR ports are enabled/disabled via software. You must enable the serial port with the ps2.exe program from windows so it is available when linux boots, you set up the default state with this tool.

This is what I found:
ps2 ir disable
ps2 imodem enable
ps2 serial enable
ps2 serial address 1

from a command prompt in windows, it's from this web page:
http://www.geocities.com/netmasta10bt/tp600e.html

A few other pages said if you turn it on with ps2 in windows you don't need to do anything special with the 'tpctl' tool mentioned on the page for the serial port to work, if tpctl is needed on the linux end e6tuner own't work because it's not going to do anything special with tpctl as it's not present on it. It shouldnt need it though, you should be able to make it have a regular serial port available normally with the ps2 tool.

Let me know how it goes.

looks absolutely amazing. Open customization of the guage page should make setting up my HUD system a lot easier once I get the screen in.

keep up the good work

For those of us (non-Linux experts) running Linux, can I make an executable from the .img file, or can you make one available? I'm running Debian/GNU with the 2.2.2 kernel.

Andrew, when pre18 comes out I will make a seperate standalone package of just the executable available for people already using linux.

As for everyone else, I am still working on e6tuner I've just been busy at a new job which hasnt left me much time to be active on the forums.

One e6tuner user has contacted me recently to report that e6tuner works in windows running under virtualpc, and using this he is able to run the dos and linux software side by side - he prefers e6tuner for engine monitoring and minor tuning because it is so much more visual but still needs the original software for configuration changes and things like linearize (which I will be adding soon enough). He sent me a screenshot:
http://pengaru.com/~swivel/e6tuner_screen_shot.JPG

I presume you just download the .img or .iso and tell virtualpc to boot it, and thats all there is to it. He is using a 3Ghz laptop, and claims it is fast even under virtualpc on this machine.

Even though I don't use or like windows myself, I think thats pretty cool
