locking timing (oh noes!) e8 FD

ok. i swear ive read everything and totally understand how to lock timing.

e8, fd, ls1 coils

but I cannot get a signal on T1. but it is getting spark. if I pull the plug and attach a spark plug to it and get it to arch to a ground the timing gun can pick that up.

now if I put it back on the engine it doesnt. the timing light does pick up the leadings, but I need t1.

so as of now I got one of those spark testers at autozone (attach spark plug wire and ground other end). it gets a spark. I disabled the injectors and locked the timing just cranking. (since the gun can pick it up with it arching while cranking).

but I wanna check it while the car is running. and it still doesnt get a signal. it seems like its still off when the car is idling. now just for trial, i moved my trigger angle around and the car seems to idle better.

any ideas why I cant get a signal on T1? ive tried changing coils around, changing plug wires, tried 3 guns from cheapos to crafstmen. (note: this same problem occurred when I had my stock ign setup, was hoping the ls1 coils I had laying around would do better)

cliff notes: cant get a signal on T1 to lock timing

forgot to add that I thought this orginal problem might of been a grounding issue. I rechecked the stock grounding points and added a grounding kit
