ignition

I know it's a stupid question, but the ignition triggered on the leading (+ve) edge or the falling (-ve) edge? I have just fitted an E11v2 on a 3rd gen (1995) and can't seem to get it running well at idle and low load/rpm without using 35-40deg ignition advance (ie. this was the map I downloaded from HITMAN's website!). I tried bringing the advance down to approx 15-22deg, but it just keeps stalling and won't run well.
