How user friendly is a haltech?

I am still contemplating whether to go piggy-back(s-afc/boost controller/turbo timer) or to go with a haltech. I have not been totally pushed to either side yet. I mean I would like the availability of every option on the haltech but its not really worth it if I have to take it somewhere everytime I change something. I want to be able to at least start off with intake/exhaust with the haltech myself and don't want to blow my engine. Which route would be better for me? I plan to get the GReddy turbo kit upgrade this fall/winter with a fmic and thats basically as far as I want to go for a while at least. Please give me your opinions and remember I have never tuned any vehicle and am not in any way shape or form a mechanic. Thanks alot.

i am guessing from your sig that you are refering to a tII? on my tII i have fd rotors, huge street port, a stock turbo made into a t04, fmic, fd fuel pump, a homemade boost controler, and a 2.5in full exhaust and fcd. i get 10lbs all day. no problems. no need for a haltech in that car yet.
