Erratic engine speed problem

OK, my friend just got his E6K back from its SECOND attempt at
getting fixed from AUS. It was sent back because even though it
would communicate with the laptop again (its original problem), it
wouldn't provide any spark.

We sent it back, and they told him that they had to order some extra
chips to repair it. Well, we got it back today and dropped it in to
fire the car up. The Data page showed 1200 or so RPMs when we turned
the starter over. Once it caught, it showed RPMs around 5000-6000
when the car was barely holding an idle.

The other problem was that I managed to get it to idle on its own for
about 3 minutes earlier. Not odd, right? The fuel pump was OFF!
The injectors were buzzing like crazy, like they were being run hard.

We're currently using 7.07 10 21. I'm considering reflashing back
to 6.32 or so to see if we're just hitting some huge bug.

Does anyone have any insight to this?

Ive had problems similar to this with a few Xs and the K. Usually though its not showing consistant at high RPM like the problem your having so I could be completly off on this. It will usually show up as a blip in RPM on the data screen at idle then shows 5 or 6K for a few seconds causing the ECU to think the engine is at the higher RPM part of the map then it will start to run rich. Most of the time its caused by interfearence in the trigger pick up line being run to close to power or ignition wires. The other cause is having your trigger gain set too high making the trigger input more sensitive to interfearence. Like I said though not exactly the same problem but these are easy things to check. As for your software and firmware I only use V634 on my K (not going to change if it aint broke dont fix it) so I dont have any experiance with the newer stuff.

I understand. My gains are turned all the way to zero, so that's not it. I'll look at the routing to make sure that it isn't causing a problem. I'm thinking that it isn't the problem, though because the other unit I used worked flawlessly and nothing has changed in the setup since then.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Just in case anyone was wondering, we THINK we have found the problem. The unit had a 7.07 firmware update when we got it back. We loaded the older firmware after receiving advice from Ted K and BDC.

I still have to swap in a new set of plugs and reset the timing, but it seems like everything will be fine now. The car fired up on the first try with no major issues after reflashing the ECU.

Thanks to both Ted and B.

Nice!
Congrads!
Now you know why I like to stick with the old stuff.
In this case, newer doesn't necessary mean better.

BTW, the old, established firmware was 8 / 14.
We use proggie 6.34 exclusively with this firmware version with the best results for the 13B.
