E8 Communication problems... Haltech won't go online???

I have a Haltech E8 and can't get the ECU to go online with the halwin software. It just always says "HALTECH DISCONNECTED" I have tried the Com port thing, the baud rate, tried on a dell laptop on a Hp computer, both with Windows XP. I have tried it straight serial and usb to serial converter. I switched with a new ECU. I am using the Halwin V1_59. I have tried almost everything. Not even Haltech could help me with this. Does anyone know anything I can try or if anyone had experience with this kind of thing????

If all else fails, send the unit to Haltech Office in California to see if the comm chip is dead on that unit.

I assume that it's not installed in your car. I have a E8, but it was installed and I just added a USB-Serial converter, plugged it into the laptop, and it worked with Halwin 1.62.

If Haltech got your unit to work, then it's either related to your computer or your serial cable. There are devices called break-out boxes, that show the RS232 signals (CD, DSR, DTR, CTS, CTR, SD, RD) to provide more visiability. Can you connect a modem to the serial port (COM1) and communicate with that?
