e6x engine start problems

I installed an e6x on my 84 GSL with a s5 turbo 2 motor. I used k2rd and hitman's cas and coil method of wiring. I am also using hitman's e6k map V6.34. I lined up the yellow mark with the pointer on the crank pulley, and i stabbed the cas with the 2 large points line up with the screw cap holes. The problem is, when i try start the timing is all over the place even with the timing locked at -5. no matter what trigger angle i try, icant get the marks to line up while cranking. this is with trigger and home gais set to 2, 24 tooth w/tooth offset 3. then i finally get it to start w/trigger and home gains set to 0 but it will not idle. the spark is very eratic it moves all over and the engine is very choppy. And heres the wierdest part, as i increase the rpm the egine speed under the data page goes from a bouncy 900 rpm to 12 or 13000 rpm with very little engine speed increase. any info will appreciated as i am new to haltech.

i am going to try setting the timing using the base map that came with the haltech , I checked my wiring and everything is correct, unless the wiring has changed from E6k-E6X.

Ok bro. Your problem is first of all almost certainly wiring. You can try a higher gain to see if that fixes any of your probs, but first check the hookups to the reluctors against the hitman's page, and also read BDC's info sheet at http://bdc.cyberosity.com. Further, make sure the cable is shielded up to as close to the CAS as possible. More than a few inches of unshielded cable is bad. Make sure the lines are run to the right (signal or ground) side of the right (home or trigger) pickup. If your rpm values jump around (in the E6X data page) during cranking and are erratic then there's still a problem with the signal from the CAS. That cable is critical and the shielding is very important. So check it well.

Oh, and the colors DID change from E6K to E6X, so you NEED to review the E6X documentation thoroughly. You cannot install it from the E6K info. The concepts are the same, of course. Just the wire color changed. If you still have trouble search for some other posts from me and you'll see some replies that contain the hookup description for the E6X. I'm just too lazy now to find them for you.

oh and set the offset to 11. this is the mazda factory offseth. Well it is for the S6 engine. But maybe not for the S5. But try it.

Oh and yeah the wires changed frome E6K to E6X.

Bingo. Offset depends on how he sets up the CAS properly, but if he set it up the stock way (line up the mark on the CAS, watch with the top cover off to make sure its not a tooth off or something when you insert it) then yes, even on an S4/S5 the stock offset is 11 (or sometimes 2 I have heard if 11 gives probs still, but I'm running 11 offset, 65 trigger angle, stock setup and just tweaked the CAS until it lined up bang on). Hitman has pics of this and BDC has a killer writeup to augment hitman's essay.
