I have had the Crane Hi-6 amplifying the leading coils for the last 3 years now. Since I'm hooking up my haltech soon I wanted revise a better ignition system. I am sure there are more effecient methods out there now that work much better than the one I have currently. I have thought about running two MSDs to the leading coil, and one MSD 6a amplifying the trailing coil of things. Or even saving the headache and running the HKS twinpower amp. I have also kept in mind on not cooking the stock coil on my FD as think this could possibly happen.

Any opinions on what an effective sytem is or on what people seem to be happy with now?

I think most of us are using the stock parts only unless very high boost is going to be used. I am using all the stock turbo II ignition parts and have the Haltech fire it. most of the FD guys are doing the same, using the Haltech to fire the stock coils and igniters. I have seen a couple very high boost rotaries using the MSD DIS systems with success, but for under 20 psi I think you could save a few hundred bucks and use it for something else. the stock ignition is actually a very good setup and with the Haltech running it it is even better, plus it is already on the car.

 

All the people that I know that run more than 20psi still run the stock coils. Most of them run 10s in the 1/4, so at least the stock coils are good enough for 10s.

 

If you really wanna change it i would go with Jacobs electronics Rotery performance pack.. especally made for the RX-7 this can be found at www.rx7.com you can order it there. It has helped Ari get in the low 9's this is what i am putting on my nest fd. Just be sure you put some nice plugs in b 4 you put this on.

most people i have talked to say if you plan on running mid 20psi or more or plan on using the gas which is 110+ octane then you'll need something more than the factory coils, anything less and the factory coils are more than up to the task

 

Do your REX a favor if your going to replace the factory ignition(which is very good stock if you ask me) and use MSD ignition and coils. Whether it's their DIS or 6al or 7AL's. I have seen plenty of jacobs, crane, etc go to ****.
