Anyone know of a "How-to. . ." for wiring

I understand and am comfortable with the basic (very basic) elements of wiring well (always soldering splices, shrink tubing, checking continuity, etc) but am unfamiliar with the finer points of PROPER wiring.

Is there a how-to anywhere or can we start to make one that offers guidance on gauge selection, shielding (heat and interference), i've read about twisting/braiding wire pairs a certain way to minimize interference, fusing, etc etc?

I'd really like to be more educated on the topic.

Thank you for any and everything.

Wow, you're asking for a lot of info in one thread...
It runs the gamut from basic electronics to college level electromagnetic theory!

Length versus gauge current charts should be easy to find.
I have a really nice one from a dirt offroad (of all things) magazine that I'm too lazy to redo and post.
I might just get off my lazy *** and take care of this if there is enough interest.

Electrical Shielding...
Most of it unnecessary if you follow some basic rules.
Keep (low voltage signal) wires away from high voltage (AC) sources.
High voltage sources are typically the alternator (it's AC rectified down to DC) and coils / spark plug wires / spark plugs.
Remember, coils / spark plug wires / spark plugs are firing over 10,000 volts!
More power means more EMI - electro-magnetic interference.

Heat shielding...
Watch out in and around the turbo / exhaust areas.
If needed, there's a lot of good products that can help.
I like to use the DEI stuff - it's basically a fiberglass fabric tube with a shiny (aluminum?) outer layer.
If done correctly, split wire loom (black corrugated stuff) is good enough most of the time.
High temp tape can help - I like to use 3M Super 33+.
Wire loom + Super 33+ tape is usually good enough in most of my installs.
Sometimes installing that DEI is a royal pain, cause it's not split, and you gotta snake all the wires through first.
I've seen other products that are split and easier to install, but I've never used them myself.
It's easier to heat shield the exhaust components.

Side note, most people claim they can solder, but most can't.
Trick is to heat the wire FIRST and flow the solder into the wire.
If possible, solder gun from underneath - heat flows upward - then flow the solder from the top.
Solder joint should be shiny.
You should not see a glob or globs of solder all over the place.
Less solder you see, the better - solder should wick into the wires instead of sitting on top of the wires.
