another connecting problem

I cant connect to the haltech i am using a old IBM computer with DOS 6.0. I connected directly into the haltech with no cord, and i keep getting the reocnect the haltech message when i have both coms set on com 1. When using com 2 it just hangs up. Dose the ignition have to be on? How can i test that the haltech has power? thanks
Marc

test your switched power and 12V+ while ign is on with a test light. make sure its grounded.
as for the laptop, make sure your computer sees the serial port os COM1. if not, make the changes in the laptop BIOS.

I had the same problems. Ignition needs to be on. Select Com 1. As long as the haltech has power, ground and the grey wire is properly connected to a ignition switched 12V source (the one that controls the haltech ECU power relay), you should get a connection from the haltech to the laptop.
