Hey all,

I work in the R&D department at GReddy Performance Products here in Irvine and am trying to do some market research to gauge interest for a FMIC for the FD RX7. I would like to hear what the end user would like to see in a FMIC. Would you all like to see a large FMIC that fills the grill or are you more interested in a upgraded SMIC? Also what price range are you looking for?

Any chance that you guys could find a way to make a v mount instead of FMIC? I think you guys do sell a kit, it's just expensive and difficult to find.

I think most FD owners view that as the ideal setup because we aren't blocking air to the radiator, and allowing both units to function optimally.

 

I think there has been a trend away from FMICs towards VMounts and large, well ducted SMICs. The reason for this is preserving airflow to the radiator - which is essential for rotaries and probably not as important for other vehicles. The only caveat being a 3Rotor swap where space is eaten up by the additional length / placement of the motor and an FMIC is the only feasible option.

I think right now Defined Autoworks probably has one of the best VMount setups and Pettit Racing (similar to the now defunct M2 and CWC) has one of the best SMIC setups.

GReddy already offers a FMIC for the RX-7. Is this something different?

To me it sounds like they are considering revamping their intercoolers for the RX-7 and they're just trying to figure out how to make it "better" or at least better geared towards the FD3S community.

Perhaps that means a different / bigger / cooler FMIC - perhaps that means a SMIC.

 

Sorry for the confusion guys, the intercoolers listed on our website have recently been discontinued. The reason they are still up on the web site is because Trust japan might have some old inventory in-stock that would have to be a special order item. We will be changing our core design and while we do this I would like to take the opportunity to "tailor" so to speak, our new kits to the end user.

 

If you're overhauling the entire line, I'd say you'd want one FMIC, one VMount, one small SMIC that doesn't require battery relocation and one large SMIC. Ducting on both SMICs can't be overlooked.

I'm always surprised how well the small SMICs sell in the secondary market. I'm not sure if that has to do with price, not having to relocate battery, stock-ish looks or what... but see for yourself:

As far as piping, I'd say make them all to work with GReddy elbow and OEM twins - people running single turbo won't be scarred away from having to modify a hot side pipe. Maybe as a nice way to set yourself apart from other manufacturers would be to include TBolt clamps...? Probably doesn't cost a whole lot more when bought at scale, but gives the end user a bit of confidence.

 

You are right the cost of t-bolt clamps is not that much greater when buying them in bulk, but I am not a big fan of t-boltclamps. I like the cleaner look that the worm gear clamps can provide. We use worm gear clamps on our FD race car and they hold well at our boost level which is almost 30psi, but if more of you all would like to see t-bolts that is something I am open to looking into.

 

I get it, arguably overkill... just a little idea to try and differentiate.

I'm sure you and many other people will have much better ideas then that.

Thanks for hearing my opinion on it. I do like your idea's and if more people are interested in seeing items like t-bolt clamps I want to be able to offer that.

I'd love to see a nice thick BLACK SMIC that fits in the stock location, works with the stock duct, and doesn't require us to move the battery.

I just described my old Blitz SMIC. I looked for a clean one for nearly a year, had it painted, and now I can fly under the smog guys radar, but still keep my AITs low(er) at the track. Keep the GReddy logo off of the top of it--nice and low-key-- and I guarantee it'll sell.

 

+100 to this, describes what I would want with additional provision that it work with stock (including efini y-pipe) intercooler piping.
