Talking SBG GB: Premium Indoor/Outdoor Car Covers: For your Base, R1/R2, Aftermarket, 99 Spec

As our fleet of test cars at SakeBomb Garage has grown over the years, we’ve struggled with trying to keep our cars and customer cars at the shop clean, dry, and protected from the sun. Despite our best efforts, even cars stored inside are still subject to dust and grime, and cars stored outside, well, all bets are off. Depending on the season, outside cars are exposed to rain, dirt, wind, intense sun, and the inevitable bird attack.

To make matters worse, body kits such as 99 Spec conversions and other add-ons create fitment problems. Even the best universal car covers still allow water and dirt through, and only seem to last one season. The higher quality fitted covers we’ve tried are geared towards either indoor or outdoor use only with a very limited range of fitment. This provided a problem with our 99 Spec, aftermarket body kit, and track-prepped cars. This inspired us to look into making our own covers, which we’ve refined and tweaked over the past year for our own cars and customer cars which have come through.

After years of trial and error, we settled on what we feel is the absolute best indoor/outdoor material hands down, which successfully fends off rain, dirt, pollen, dust, sap, wind, harsh sunlight and UV, and birds These Weathershield HP covers, made by NexTec, are by far the best engineered cover material we’ve used to date, and are extremely lightweight and compact down into a bag that fits in the trunk. To fit some of the body kits and wings on cars at the shop, we revised our patterns further and further to specifically fit 99 Spec conversions as well as track cars and other features such as side skirts, diffusers, splitters, and front lips. As a side benefit the covers provide additional security from unscrupulous individuals looking to break into your car, and if used with a lock and strap, the cover creates one more step between them and even seeing what’s in it at all. To the untrained eye, you might as well have a Ford Taurus underneath the cover.

Highlights:

Severely hydrophobic – NexTec material sheds water instantly as it hits the cover
Breathable - allows any heat, moisture, or condensation under the cover to escape while preventing moisture and dirt from getting underneath
Weatherproof - fends off water, wind, dust, pollen, sap, paint fade, snow, and birds
Packs small and light - takes up less space than a messenger bag
Superior paint finish protection - silky smooth texture is even less abrasive than flannel
Easy maintenance – wash in your home laundry machine
Durable fabric - years of worry-free protection against the elements
Extra security - keep your car safe and protected from unscrupulous attention
Paint saver - you won’t have to wash your car as often. Call it eco-friendly, but here at SBG we just have more exciting things to do with our time.

Pricing:

Base FD w/ No wing: $280 (Retail: $305) – Made for OEM '93-'95 cars with no wing
R1 / R2 with OEM wing: $280 (Retail: $305) – Made for R1 model '93-'95 with R1 wing
99 Spec / Aftermarket Front: $315 (Retail: $340) – allows for aftermarket front, side skirts, diffuser, front lip, & low/small wing
99 Spec / Aftermarket with 99 Spec / Medium Wing: $325 (Retail: $350) – allows for aftermarket front, side skirts, diffuser, front lip, & 99 Spec/Medium wing
99 Spec / Aftermarket with High Track Wing: $350 (Retail: $375) – allows for aftermarket front, side skirts, diffuser, front lip or splitter, & high-mount track wing

NOTE: *** Add $30 for any "premium" color (listed below)***

Colors: (oh yeah, match your FD )

Gray / SSM (standard)
Taupe (premium)
Red / VR (premium)
Yellow / CYM (premium)
Green / Montego (premium)
Light Blue (premium)
Dark Blue / IBM (premium)
Black / BB (premium)

Care instructions:

These covers can be washed in a home washing machine (without agitator). Add one cup of Simple Green concentrate, set the machine to cold, and spin to medium. We recommend completing an additional rinse-only cycle on cold to remove all detergents. DO NOT put the cover in the dryer; simply put it out on your clean car to air-dry. For light dirt and grime, simply rinse the car cover on the car with clean water and allow to air-dry.

How are the inside? Im mainly going to use it for indoor storage, so the softness and protection from "garage accidents" are my primary concern. I have been looking at indoor covers up untill now. The Coverking Indoor Satin Stretch was my choise, but that lacks the 99 wing.

I was thinking this looks exactly like the CA car cover I have for my car. Just cooler due to the Sakebomb logo.

Here's a little trade secret, CA Car Covers covers are actually produced by another manufacturer. As is CoverCraft, Cover King, etc, etc. They all come from the same manufacturer, just with independent patterns

The Weathershield HP is the top of the line material, however if you guys want the cheaper material (though I've used it and don't really recommend it) we can have these patterns made in a cheaper material. Anyway long story short, even though our margins are MUCH smaller than these volume cover companies, our prices are in line with everyone else.

The issue for the more complex race wing covers is the additional complexity and material we are using which bumps the price up (we don't make anything additional off of the more expensive covers, and our patterns allow much more room for side skirts, front lip/slitter, diffusers, and provisions for various wings.).

The price is no different as well (at least for our base and R1 patterns, though I'd argue we refined the pattern quite a bit fitment wise versus the CA car covers that's why we bothered fiddling around with this stuff in the first place... the CA Car Covers had a few fitment issues in places but also did not fit the various wings and body parts we have on our shop cars.

I can assure you though, all of our patterns are very much unique to us . We legitimately did refine them over and over through many iterations for each style. It wasn't a cheap exercise

I am sure you did, which is why I'm thinking about replacing mine. It doesn't quite fit my 99 lip, sideskirts, or big *** muffler.

This is why I'm getting one from SakeBomb instead of Covercraft. I could get it cheaper from them thru my work, but they do not have fitment for 99 spec.

Also, SakeBomb actively develops parts for our cars/community. I'd much rather support a forum vendor when I can. It just so happens that they are offering something I desparately need now that I got my car painted and do not have a garage

Thank you Vince! I definitely appreciate it. Every little bit we make off of parts goes right back into parts development. We're hurting after the last few months which were pretty development heavy but we've got some cool stuff in development which we're trying to wrap up this month.

I hear you on the fresh paint, during the first month of curing you cant wax your car and these covers on a clean finish allow them time to cure without being hit with direct sun and keeping the new/fragile paint safe while it off gasses.

This cant be underlined enough! Having people support those who develop to our cars are vital for the platform. Its a 20year old car, and we are left in the hands of the few who want to make stuff for it, and then we cant start crying for china prices. On the KL platform we have this problem, with few/no people doing R&D because everybody wants everything for free.

Sure you can find everything anywhere cheaper someplace else, and you can spend a bit less if you make the what-ever kit yourself. But then those who do make the kits will run out of buisness, and the platform will die.

There are cheaper fabric options if price is the hangup for everyone... I can find out what the cheaper material runs but we selected the highest quality option as we assumed that's what everyone would naturally gravitate towards.

Maybe we over-estimated the desire for 99 spec and aftermarket wing car covers. Hopefully we can meet our minimum numbers for a production run.
