Group Buy: Fuel Anti-Surge System

Fellow FD racers and enthusiasts,

There's recently been some interest in the RSE FD Fuel Anti-Surge System and so I've decided to create a new group buy. The anti-surge system is on sale for $189 + shipping through the end of the year and is immediately available! If you already know about this product you can go right to the product page and order while supplies last. If you're unfamiliar with the issues of fuel surge in the FD, read on!

The anti-surge system addresses a major weakness of the FD's fuel system that becomes obvious as soon as you start to autocross or road race your car. The fuel tank is very shallow and the location of the fuel pump and pickup is offset to the driver's side of the car. In hard corners (especially left-hand turns) fuel can slosh away from the pickup and introduce air into the lines.

Once this air reaches the fuel injectors, the mixture instantly leans out and the car stumbles violently or shuts down until fuel refills the lines. When fuel supply can't meet the demand of the motor it is commonly referred to as fuel surge. In some cases surge has caused the destruction of rotary motors due to detonation (knock) under boost due to the sudden lean conditions in the combustion chamber.

FD owners who regularly race their cars have found rather quickly that if they run with anything less than 5/8 of a tank, fuel surge is likely. As a result, most run their cars with nearly full tanks (weighing about 120 pounds!) and have to refill often during the day which is a very poor solution.

In purpose-built racecars it's common to have a surge tank which collects fuel in a tall, narrow vessel. Even though the fuel still sloshes around under cornering, the column of fuel is too high to ever uncover the pickup, thus eliminating surge. However, these systems require a lot of additional fittings and lines, a secondary high-pressure pump (that usually sits outside the surge tank) and a place to mount all of these new parts. For street cars it's expensive, complicated, noisy, and can introduce fuel into the passenger compartment which is a big safety hazard.

The RSE FD Fuel Anti-Surge System was designed to offer the benefits of an external surge tank without the associated cost, complexity, and safety issues. This is accomplished by converting the plastic baffle that surrounds the factory fuel pump into an in-tank surge box. The anti-surge system is fabricated from stainless steel and special fuel-resistant gasket material. This ensures a long service life and excellent performance. With this system the FD can be run at well below 1/2 of a tank without any starvation issues which is a huge improvement, shaving at least 60 pounds off the running weight of the car--and eliminating the need for frequent refills during the track day.

The anti-surge system fits the factory fuel pump as well as the Denso (Supra), Walbro, and Bosch 044 pumps without any modification. Other pump configurations are possible, and templates are provided to help you create clearance for whatever setup you have. The system works with every type of FD including international and RHD vehicles.

RSE has run a number of group buys on the Fuel Anti-Surge System in the past. We've shipped quite a few of these products internationally to satisfied customers, and some of those have left great reviews of the product on the website.

We are presently running a special group buy as follows:

1) We have a number of units in our inventory now on sale for $189 plus shipping. Simply go to the product page and place an order. We usually ship in 48 hours and use USPS to ship both domestically and internationally. Anything ordered by December 17th will ship no later than the 18th; anything after that will be shipped at the beginning of the new year.

2) Once we run out of inventory we'll make a list on the primary group buy thread. We'll close this group buy on February the 15th so that we can finish the production run in time for the 2010 race season.

If you have any questions, please contact me at chris@rs-engineering.com. For some information on a previous group buy (and more positive customer feedback) check out
the original GB thread.
