I need a driver's door handle now, so how soon are these going to come to production if at all? I'm ready to buy.

We had some issues with the last foundry (different one than our interior aluminum handles as we couldn't get the parts prices low enough for such a low volume run at this price). We're going to try a new foundry, but as you can see this could be a longer process than we were expecting with these low production numbers. If we had 75 people + on board this would be a different story but to retain quality, keep prices down, AND make just a handful of cast parts is a very tricky procedure. To be honest, we were hoping for much higher numbers so we could use our current facility but they wont do parts in the 10's (well they will but the price would be exponentially higher).

How much higher? I'd be willing to pay more than $200 if we could get them sooner.

mold costs for our last piece were above $5K. These are smaller but there are two of them. Rough estimate for just the mold cost alone with our current precision casting shop (distributed into only 30 sales) would be $200 per set... just for the molds alone. Then there's the cost to actually produce them which is the real "work" in making them, a little finishing sanding and machine work, powder coat, shipping and paypal fees. As you can see there's very little room for profit in high quality cast parts in low volume. Low quality parts you can make a killing, if you can trick people into buying them. We dont/wont do that.

There are Chinese manufacturers which will cast for much cheaper but the quality is pretty poor unless you bring them quantities in the thousands, turn around times are very high, and your molds can "disappear" quite easily. Basically we cant control quality and whatever shows up in a box after three months of waiting is what we're stuck with, and what by default our customers are stuck with. Complicating matters, aluminum shrinks after it cools, so if the molds arent made to compensate for this shrinkage you have parts that dont fit quite right (like the xxxxx motorsports brand parts that pulled the carpet out from under our last casting GB). They dropped the price by 50 bucks and we couldn't compete any longer. We started with a list of 80 people and ended with a list of 55 or so if I remember correctly, but that was enough to kill the whole project from a volume perspective.

Long story short we're working to find a cheaper method that doesn't sacrifice quality but still allows low volume production, but those two objectives don't go together so well. The numbers of FD's that are out there are very small, so volume parts don't really happen, and they're not Ferraris so high production prices aren't feasible either. Rock and a hard place... but we're exploring other options now.

I understand all your points. I was just hoping to buy your handles because of the quality of your products, but I guess I'll have to order the other aluminum handles and hope they're nice.

No worries, I wish we had them done now too but with the samples we've seen from the cheap shops we were less than satisfied. Good luck

I'd rather wait for yours to get figured out. I tried another company's and I had to modify them to work and I still can't get in the drivers side door.

Lightbulb Door Handles

I would be very much interested in getting my self a pair, given that my passenger side door is in need of a new one

On that note though, has anyone dealt with the website rx7doorhandles.com? They are offering a pair of handles powder coated black and shipped to your house for $222, which seems pretty good to me. Its a little over the $200 mark that was set, but maybe we can contact them and see if they lower it for a mass buy?

I've used them (have a set here)... the alignment was off, the castings were porous/finish was pitted, and the overall quality was pretty shoddy. As I've said before, we know there are other companies out there that do them, but unfortunately I've had issues with the other sets I've tried (which is why we're working on making our own). You guys are free to try out the other options, but this thread exists because we've been there/done that already, and with a reduction in people interested the project will surely fall apart. We just cant make parts when we don't have enough people to buy them. Same thing happened with the cast map lid cover... our GB numbers fell apart because another vendor offered to do it cheaper, and the whole thing got canned. These other "companies" pop up overnight, offer cheap parts, and then disappear... leaving poorly made parts behind that need to be replaced. They profit briefly then jump ship

Unfortunately the bottom is falling out of the FD market and many of the new owners don't want to put quality parts on their cars anymore. As a result we're seeing fewer and fewer customers that want our high-end products. (We just bought a Lotus Elise to expand into that market, as we're having a hard time keeping the quality up and still having buyers for FD stuff). For civics you can make cheap parts in high volume with ok quality because you're selling the parts in the hundreds or thousands. Parts for the FD sell in the 10's, so if you see anything "cheap" you have to ask yourself what was sacrificed to bring the price down , as these vendors (including ourselves) do not sell any amount of volume for FD parts.

Dan,
If it matters I want to put quality parts on my car AND I'm willing to pay for it. Keep up the good fight!

I had to order handles because my driver's handle has been broken for so long, so I did order the set from rx7doorhandles.com. It beats not being able to get into the car, but I'm sure the SBG handles would've been much better. The finish on my handles was pretty smooth, but there are a few rough spots around the edges. I also had to hit the arms with a grinder to make them fit into the slots, but I did get them to work well with some persuasion.

I have bought a couple of products from SBG already, and I will do so again when I get to the headlight portion of my restoration if there are still sets available. I greatly appreciate the attention to detail, and it's unfortunate that most of the few FDs out there are selling so cheaply. High quality parts being in such low demand is going to make it tough on people trying to repair/restore their cars properly.

Thanks for the heads up on this company, glad I asked before purchasing.

You make a good point on the high quality items and I agree with you. No one will be getting in the passenger side of my 7 for a while so its no big issue right now. I rather wait some time and get the good stuff. Go ahead and put me down on your list for a set.

SBGarage, are you still doing the Group Buy? I have been looking for aluminum door handles everywhere. I missed an eBay deal last September, and havent been able to find any under $200. Please PM me if you are still doing this, and if we can work out a deal. Thanks

We still can't find a vendor to meet our price point. Either the price goes way up or we keep searching until we find a reasonable shop that will make quality pieces. We're looking into the price for one last process that will possibly change the game... hopefully we'll hear back soon on the cost for that option.
