TN GB Interest- BIGFOOT fuel starve eliminator

BIGFOOT fuel starve eliminator
Fits in stock tank
Uses stock stalk/level sensor/sock
3 liter free volume
Supplied by return line and a right side one-way valve
Only install mod is removal of the "worthless" plastic tray

Pics show the prototype pattern. We are currently building two units for fitment testing. Price target is to be under $400, pending quotes for a 20 unit run.

During our autoX build we tried foam, plastic tray lid and a half tank and all failed to stop fuel starve. So we built a bigfoot type in-tank collector and it has worked flawlessly for two years for both track and autoX.We guarantee no fuel starve.

Let us know what you think about the design and if you are interested (start list).

Here's a view of the BIGFOOT in-tank. The silver washer shows location of the check valve for collector fill during right hand turns.
This pic made possible by cutting a window in our old half tank....as mentioned, it also failed to eliminate fuel starve.

A couple of pics to show perspective. As you may appreciate the design difficulty is getting all the stock components to fit in and around the collector and allow install through the 4"x6" oval on the tank top...but they do.

Time to start an "Interested List" in preparation for final pricing and testing of the initial two production units:
Please add your handle if you are interested and remove if you change your mind.

Free bump for you Jim.

I saw the title name "BIGFOOT" and I just had to jump in here. I found myself a "big foot" in the tank which was somewhat hilarious. However I've upgraded myself to the hyperion fuel surge tank cover already, but I am sure your "bigfoot" will work better since most fuel actually stayed within a contained unit.

With that said, good job on a solid design ;-).

Hey Eric.....If all goes well we should finish fabricating the first BIGFOOT next week and will post lots of pics.
As I may have mentioned we tried the surge tank cover....it did not work for our autoX car, probably due to the many rapid and violent high G transitions .We never had a chance to try it on a track.

Had this question from MAXSPD :

" I am definitely down! Not really sure why the auto-x and track would be different!? "

As the design has progressed we have decided that autoX and track units will be the same with TWO one-way fill valves....one on right side and one left.

Previous owner told me he had installed a 99' spec tank that has additional baffles. Any idea if they'd get in the way of installing one of these? I've never had fuel starve on the track but I'm paranoid and barely ever run around at less than a 1/2 tank. It'd be nice to not have to go get gas all the time during the day.

If it'll fit, I'd be interested in the updated model with valves on each side.

Very good question.....we don't know for sure and will research the '99 spec tank for baffle placement. Doubt it would be in the plastic tray area (where BIGFOOT is located) because there are already baffles all around this section.
Also. Mazda baffles will not eliminate fuel starve on the track or for autoX.
We will report findings.

Prototype BIGFOOT is made and ready for the welder to zip it up next week. The red nuts show approx location of the two check valves for fill during left and right turns.

Volume test results
Free volume..............3.2 liters
With stock pump.......3.0 liters
With Bosch 044.........2.7 liters

Yes,so far this thing fits through the OEM assembly port.
More pics in a few days

More BIGFOOT development pics:

1. In-tank view with check valves installed.
2. Looking into bottom of unit with check valves,OEM pump and sock. Plenty of room for a larger diameter pump like the Bosch 044.
3..So you know who you are talking to.....pic from Solo Nationals last September right after Carter won the SSM championship in our little FD. Old guy on left is me (Jim T) and young guy with no hair, Carter T.

Some pics to show the OEM cover that you need to buy a new tank to get it. It appears the change came earlier then the "99spec" 95/96 time frame.

Thank you Vlad....from these pics the BIGFOOT should fit just fine in the later tanks.

Mazda made a nice cover BUT it still has a big opening on the tray top and that left side funnel(which has an unknown function ???) and based on our experience these changes will not prevent high-g maneuver fuel starve......unless the fuel level is kept at least at 1/2.

I think the funnel was designed to force refill the facgtory baffle as the fuel moves from a high g left turn fuel is moved away from the baffle so hence the right side of the baffle is flat, with the right side of the tank having fluid slush preventive aluminum incerts. As when the car straightens up or goes into a right hand turn, the baffle takes over to funnels the fuel in rapidly as the fuel supply is on the left close to the wall of the fuel tank, same goes for rapid acceleration and braking, there seems to be an issue with starving during launches with our cars, hence the factory adding a baffle top to slow down the rate at which the fuel leaves the baffle! A bandaid if you will. The bigfoot designs reminds me of what a 350z fuel system is like, it has a similar design just smaller to retain the fuel! CJ Motorsports created another version for dual pumps, but the bucket style design was used. In any case, the goal with our cars had always been to not worry of fuel starve at or below 1/4 tank. Anything more then that was all good! But as you all know, more fluid = more weight = more slush = more unwanted weight transfer in the rear, which sucks! THE END! :P

Thanks for the pics and info Vlad. I'm not generating near the g forces of Toms Auto-x car but I do run r-comps on the track. So far I haven't had any issues but I also have only gone down to a 1/4 tank once or twice on track. Otherwise I'm always topping off to keep it at or above 1/2 tank which is annoying. It'd be nice to not have to worry as much about it.

Have you guys tested just how low you can run the tank without issue?

We regularly run our autoX car down to approx 2 gallons......we start with 5 gallons.

The current design will not fit but we have another more universal design in the works that might...will keep you posted.
Your CJM twin pump is an excellent unit.If you have it out of the tank give us a holler, we need some dimensions.
