BC Capping Production Costs

Doing the bevelling and wholes might add to your unit cost. Perhaps center punch the holes, only, and let that part be a DIY option.

This is definitely an option I need to get the process dialed in before I know how long each part will take. Example right now im milling the entire pedal out of rectangular aluminum sheet. Once the final shape is dialed in I will get the overall part water jet cut and then mill the features probably.

Small update today. Milled a prototype deadpedal cover, I did not have the right size endmill so I had to take the part out of the mill on sunday, and re-zero it once I picked up an endmill which resulted in the circles being off a little bit. Also there must have been a problem with the scale on my drawing because the cover is a little too small. I will adjust the model and make another one as well as work on the wide pedal.

Here is the dead pedal cover in the mill...

And here is the cover next to the dead pedal...

Sounds good! I should have a RHD dead pedal to work with in a week or so.

Another update on the dead pedal.

I made another one today that is the correct size, sandblasted it, and then did a quick polish on the raised circles. The circles with the holes/dish definitely look a lot better than the ones on the gas pedal, I am excited to make a new gas pedal with these updated circles.

First up is the dead pedal with all the swirl marks from the mill, looks pretty cool but doesn't match the clutch or break pedal.

And finally the mock cast dead pedal.

very interesting project you got there ðŸ‘
I hope you succeed at replicating them.
you would make soooooooooooooooo many people happy.

How hard would it be for you to make a copy of the OEM one, it's a beautiful piece.

It's doable... with all the positive responses in this thread I have been considering buying some nice petrobond casting sand and casting these to try and match the OEM finish more. I have NO clue how to find what mesh sand Mazda used for the clutch and break pedal, but Im guessing some fine ~140 mesh oil bonded sand would produce pretty good results. I guess I need to consolidate all the different prototypes and maybe take a poll to see what everyone wants and go from there. Also I love machining/casting/making things but with how many people are showing interest maybe I should start getting some quotes from some local foundries and machine shops.

TLDR: I will put replicating the OEM pedal on my to-do list and see where it goes! Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the kind words and the motivation! the pictures in the first post of this thread.... ive had them in my phone for MONTHS before I finally posted. Now that the gas pedal is out there I finally have some motivation/accountability and we are making some real progress!

Also, if you want my to hurry up, how about some feedback on the current designs so we can close in on a final design faster! :p

Sorry for the late reply. Originally I planned on making a full Al replacement dead pedal, but after making some prototype dead pedal covers I have realized It will be A LOT of work. I am not saying it isnt an option but I think it would have to cost 3-4x as much as the cover. I cant talk about prices because this is an interest thread but for an example, the dead pedal cover I made today took 1.5 hours on the CNC mill .

When I get some spare time I will model all the parts needed and get some quotes on having all the parts water jet cut etc. I mentioned this is one of my last posts but once I narrow down on the most popular parts I can post a poll or something and see what options to move forward on. Thanks for the feedback!

Sideo,

My advice would be to have two versions. One as an exact OE look for the gas pedal and dead pedal. And, a second that has a very different look all together, gas, clutch, brake and dead pedal.

This way, you can cater to both markets. There are going to be people who want an aluminum pedal but want to stand out and have something different, and something more modern.

I have a 370Z Nismo in my shop right now and as I was connecting my OBD scan tool, I couldn't help but notice how handsome the pedals looked.

Maybe that's the winning formula.

The key key to me, as far as the pedals you've already made, is to keep it 100% original in look and feel. That's your challenge. The circles and swirl marks on the piece you just made are too flashy for my taste. If it looked like stock, you'd appeal to most everyone.

Theres a reason why SBG does so well with their handles and their headlights: they look factory but offer a huge performance increase. That's what you need to achieve here.

Best of luck!!

Nick

That dead pedal looks ace. I'd be down for a RHD one and accelerator pedal for sure .

Stock looking will have the largest market.
Don't waste your time with kitch and logo BS.
Even if you do it, they'll ask for something just slightly different.

+1 As long as it matches the clutch and brake we're good. I'd be up for it in the coming months.

Loving the progress

I'm with Narfle... Keep it Simple.

I think your dead pedal is 90-95% of the way there. Just counter sink the screw holes and fine some nice hardware.

For the gas pedal - do an OEM replacement and a wide version and call it a day. Again, prototype for OEM looks 90-95% of the way there.

Keep your momentum going!

Thanks for the feedback guys! I agree with you, I will do a LHD and RHD dead pedal, an OEM and a wide gas pedal. Little update today... I received my RHD dead pedal in the mail so I can start working on that. This week I would like to find what fasteners to use for the dead pedals so I can countersink them, and also make a new OEM gas pedal and wide gas pedal.

We need these for the FC....too bad you'll be hard pressed to find a set to model off of, and even then, they'll be expensive.

Love what you're doing for the FD though, I think you'll make lots of people happy.

Excellent work so far! I will throw in for "as stock looking as possible" on both the dead pedal and accelerator. I've never had a problem heel-toeing the stock pedals so a wide pedal is not desireable to me.

I wonder why they didn't make those in metal like the clutch and brake. Very confusing.

I have re-modeled the OEM and Wide OEM pedals, I should be getting the endmill I need today and if all goes well I will make one or both of these. Don't mind the horizontal line, that is where the bend starts in the model.
