Tips for scam avoidance?
Just wondering what the etiquette for purchasing from forum members is, especially international transactions, to avoid getting stooged?
I could have sworn there was a sticky on this once upon a time but cant find it.
About to make a fairly substantial purchase from a member on here, and I am pretty sure he is a good guy and he has an unblemished feedback rating but i would like to make sure that if anything goes wrong i have some recourse or proof of what went down.
Cheers.

I had a 0 post member reach out the other day about buying something and feeling apprehensive. Here's what I told him:
1) You need a PayPal account. This is really the only way people do business on the forums. It's safe for the buyer and seller. Just make sure you send the payment "for goods or services" NOT "to friends or family". When you buy something and use the friends and family, there is no recourse. When you use the goods and service, you have protection and recourse you can take if someone doesn't honor their end of the bargain.
2) Always make sure you get pictures of items. In today's day and age, EVERYONE has a camera in the cell phone and should be able to provide lots of pictures.
3) Check the member's Trader Score below the sellers name. See if there's a history of transactions, that there is positive feedback, etc.
4) If it's too good to be true, it probably is.
Additionally, as a seller ONLY ship to the verified PayPal address. You lose your protection if you don't. For international, I would avoid sending a wire transfer, there's just no recourse.
You also might have luck finding a local to "put eyes on it" if it's a substantial purchase. Doesn't guarantee anything, but at least you might have one more resource to draw on if the worst plays out.
