Wife needs help with husbands toy

Hey everyone. This is my first time on here so hopefully this works. My husband made me buy a Mazda RX7 '92.

He was so anxious that he didn't even test drive it. It just looked cool and he took the guys word for it.

So anyway, when we bought it, it was terrible to drive. My husband isn't a mechanic so he's always guessing whats wrong with it.

First the car was way to bumpy. And we found out it was the springs. The recent owners had heated them and they were just ugly. So we sorted that and got new ones.

Then whenever you take your leg off the accelarator the car pulls and makes this hideous noise.

And then after we drive it, when you lift the bonnet up, there is something red hot underneath the engine. Whatever that is. Maybe a leak in the muffler, I have no idea, neither does my husband.

The car is standard, hasn't had any modifications or anything really.

So really what I want to know is, how can we fix this heap?? I never drive it because I think its going to break down

If you know any cost effective ways to make the car safe!!!!! please reply to this email!!

much love... Mrs Wife

Bone stock '92 eh? That thing glowing red hot under your car is probably your main cat, as JDM/NZ exports didn't have a pre-cat. This means one of two things: your main cat is clogged, or you're running on your leading plugs only, or a little bit of both. Do a full tuneup on the car:

Plugs
Wires
FULL fluid flush and fill
TPS
Fuel Pulsation Dampener
Fuel Filter
Check your top (trailing) plugs for spark.

If this doesn't fix your main cat glowing problem, your cat might be clogged. If it does, source a new(used) stock main cat and just enjoy the car. Post in the 3rd gen section to figure out the rest of your problems.

I'm sure the Aussies on this board will point you in the direction of a good mechanic that specializes in these cars. It probably just needs some sorting as the previous owner might have done some questionable mechanics on it.

That was a bit foolish and very trusting, if not a little naïve

I would start with a compression test so you know where you stand. Next I would do a full 60k tune up.
You can get a “scheduled maintenance services” checklist off this site.

Ha ha WTF?? you do Realise that New Zealand is a totally different country don't you??? Aussies most likely will not have the slightest clue as to where to go for RX7's in NZ!

Anywho, I am still here and happy to help if your in my area otherwise depending on where you live I should be able to help find soeone to help

One of my clients is in Australia so yes I do know the difference. Both countries look great on TV.

i agree. i doubt the glowing red hot "thing" is your cat if you can see it under your engine from the front of the car. take some pictures so we can tell you exactly whats wrong, or just go to a rotary specialist
