why do rotaries sound the way they do?

I was just wondering why rotaries have the lovely pulsating sound they do at idle. if tyhe engine is moving at a constant speed, why would the sound be like that?

I'm no expert, but I'd have to say it's because of how the rotors pass over the ports, vs a 4-stroke piston engine where the piston doesn't actually pass across the valve...

also rotary exhaust should be pretty constant cause the ports are always open and yet the exhaust comes out in pulses
