Why Do 3rd Gen Motors Crap Out So Soon???

I am looking into buying a 93 R1 w/ 60000 miles for 11,500 but I keep seeing people post that their motors are blowing after as little as 40000 miles. Is it worth it to buy these cars? Or are they going to nickel and dime me to death because I have no clue how to work on one and the motor is a time bomb? How much does it cost in parts and labor to get a new motor and turbos installed? Thank you for the help

They break because people abuse them without taking the time to care for them properly or set them up properly.

new engine will cost anywhere from 3k to 5.5k for stock engine not including labor, expect more if you go with bigger seals, porting etc.

You CAN end up spending a lot for an engine and turbos but if you shop around you can get some awesome deals.

Is it worth it? To me YES. The engine CAN be reliable but it will take some care on your part to make sure its that way. Take care of the car and it will take care of you.

If you aren't mechanically inclined or don't want to spend time for all the required maintenance on a regular basis, this car is not for you.

Thumbs up Rotor Reliability

When I bought my 93 VR Base model, it had been a lease and had 49k on it. I drove it as my daily driver until 112k with no probs. When the clutch started going, I decided it was a good time for a rebuild and so I parked it for five months while I researched what I wanted to do (Mods) and made sure I had the cash. Most people I talked to were surprised that I got 112k out of it. If you take care of what you have it will last.

How good are reman motors from Mazda?? I am buying a car w/ one in it w/ about 3k on it and it has full exhaust and a few other mods. It makes pretty good power from what I am told. How long am I looking before this one goes? I know that is a rhetorical question... but I am not ready to replace a motor. Thanks
