whining noise

Hello all I have an 88 gxl n/a and I noticed that when I drive for about 5 to 10 min I start to get a whining sound coming from the engine I cant figure out where its coming from. from the best of my knowledge it sounds like its coming from the right side of the motor, either the powersteering pump, alternator or pulleys. I have sprayed a bit of wd40 and belt dressing, but nothing is helping. Any help would be appreciated.....thanks in advance-----ren

Rotaryrules,

Have you found the problem yet?

It could be your water pump's outer seal. If the sound gets louder over time, and eventually you find coolant under the water pump pulley, then you'll know it is the water pump.

Hope you find your problem or fix it soon.

Kace

it's weird sometimes the sound dissapears for a couple of days then returns. my temp gauge usually stays 1/4 of the way above the cold line, but I did realize that when it was making that squeaky/whining sound the temp was higher. Also i notice when I put my heater on the temp goes up. shouldn't it go down? Thanks for all your input guys------Oren

Sounds like a failed water pump. It shouldn't be too hard to take off, from what I remember. I haven't had that shape rx7 for a while now, but from what I remember it was pretty easy to remove. When you remove it I sure you'll find the wheel full of rusty kind of substance and the wheel won't turn freely.
